hi!! Sorry if I've posted this in the wrong area Embarassed

Anyway, quick facts
-I'm a gyopo
-Australian accent (seems to be working to my disadvantage..I've been trying to sound more American though)
-Female
-graduated high school in 2008 from a very good, selective, top ranking state school (im 19)
-im situated in a rather small town ... population 250 000? Jeonju area

I've been trying to find "PART TIME WORK" in hagwons, and they all seem to require me to work Mon~Fri, about 3~4 hrs, for W4000 AN HOUR!!!

That is slave labour from where I come from, and I refuse to work for that little.

So how much do you guys honestly think I should charge from private lessons or 1:1 english conversation classes at hagwons? Please bear in mind, I'm 19, female, and a gyopo. (ARGHH)

I'm thinking W25 000 per hour, targetting primary students.

I'm in Korea, attending a language school so I don't need to make crazy cash but I was hoping to save up a few thousand aussie dollars.

Thanks in advance.

And another question! For those who do teach in hagwons, what does your hourly rate come down to?

That sound you hear in the background is the sound of an angry mob. They are gathering torches and pitchforks. They are coming for you.

I wouldn't recommend bringing this up again.

my native K wife charges 100 per hour ... perfect accent NA, OZ, or BE and she has an MA+ ... you figure it out ... best her similar situated friends can get for same situation in DJ is 30 an hour (and they are natives with an MA lit English) ... good luck whatever you can charge (just hide the gypo HS thing, and WITHOUT ANY DEGREE but just being able to speak a foreign lsanguage may not cut it here in Corea any longer) .. ... but seems your not really serious in building up clients anyway ... perhapps just stick to thje going sachon rate at the institutes ... ... pretty good here for a High school graduate without a fake degree!

Do you honestly think you are entitled to make what those with university degrees make?

I suggest you look at the bigger cities if you want to make more money.

You could probably get 15k an hour if you asked. Some of my old high school students who lived abroad were able to make that.

My ass.

I have recently been informed that there are hundreds (Me: Over a hundred, damn. My boss: I said hundreds...) of online language teaching programs. They pay a healthy bit more than that.

If she's an Australian national, then no. If she has no degree it's still illegal even if she's a Korean citizen.

legally you can't, but since you're a 교포- can you speak korean well and do you have a network in korea? if so then just ask around, seek and ye shall find. don't work for any company, just do private lessons.

and not that i'm suggesting you do this, but adding a few years to your age and talking about your university days would get you more money Smile

I am guessing said person has an F4 visa, which means they can do whatever the hell they want in terms of teaching.

The Ministry of Education is the one that mandates who can tutor or teach...and so like I said earlier: good luck.

I believe it would be the same for an F-4 as for a Korean citizen, so you might like to enter a college or university, as students are able to (at least used to be able to) tutor legally. At the same time, you would be working toward a university degree.

Tutoring without a tutor's license is still illegal (though lots of people do it, I know).

If you speak Korean why not find a real job in a Korean company? Teaching is for losers. Laughing
