About three weeks ago I arrived in country and settled into my life in Masan. The studio was nice, small but it was just me there. Location was nice. Boss seemed nice, very helpful. It seemed like an all around nice gig.
So after a few days to shake off the jet lag and find my way to Emart I go out for a drink with one of the other teachers. I had one beer. Got back to my pad late, called my folks to say hey. And then things got weird.
It was 4 AM and I wanted to watch the sunrise over the water. So I take a cab to Busan, it was 40k and seemed a bargain since I could take the cheep bus home. I got there at 4:30 and went and found a PC bang to chill in. And I got into a fight. I didn't start it. And it was just a bunch of screaming. Some drunk at the pc bang kept coming over and reading over my shoulder. Really just a difference of personal space.
Until the police arrived. I tried to calm it down right away. No sweat, let's talk this out. More screaming and now some grappling. I started laughing and shouting "don't tase me bro" figuring it would all be over soon. I was ragdoll the entire time. Then I took a baton to the cheek. And was arrested.
They scared the piss out of me. and then offered to drive me to the airport. So 5 days in the country I'm getting on a plane home. With a broken cheekbone and all my stuff back at my flat.
I still have to work out getting the school their return airfare back I think (though it doesn't say so in the contract, it seems the decent thing to do). Now I'm afraid to even plan a visit to the country. |

Geeze. Poor you bro. Here is some advice for you people. Do not get into fights or arguments with KOREANS. Because when and if the police come, you are the ONE that gets screwed. Dude you should have paid the PC bang and walked out to another one. |

You must feel really discouraged after an indicent like that.
I will address the issue of personal space. Korean's are less attuned to concepts of space, therefore the reading over your shoulders. Not to mention this generation is devoid of many of the concepts manners. I have students read over my shoulder all the time... it's annoying and improper but no one has taught them otherwise that it's not OK. So we really as Westerners should understand this.
I understand that there is no way you could have known it was a cultural difference. To a degree, it is and to a degree it's not. It's pretty common decency not to involve yourself with somenoe you don't know... But kids here have been trained to think that Westerners are buddy buddy with you and have no personal space... They seem to not realize that we are human too.
Sorry to hear about your experience OP. But I guess you can rack it up as one of those good life exepriences that have tauht you something. |

okay I did embelish with the "don't tase me" comment. I only meant that I was completely submissive at this point.
And I wasn't rumbling with these guys. it was just a screaming match until the police arrive |

I am sorry to hear that...
We didnt see the replay of the whole story, I could merely guess you did something you thought justified back home but unacceptable here...whihc you might not have even noticed.
But when one door shuts, another opens. Cheer up. |

Why do I get this feeling that somewhere out there, there might be a policeman, PC-방 owner, or gamer nerd who may have a slightly different perspective on the above story? |

Manners and personal space are gained through mimicry and learning, Manners and decency aren't instinctual and we can't go around thinking that everyone knows them... And the expecation that people have manners will very well drive you mad and insane.
Personal space is very cultural related. Many South American cultures like to talk close enough so you can smell the garlic off their breath. It's to exhibit closeness, kindess, and willingness to become friends.
I knew that Korea doesn't have a concept of personal space before coming. Not so much that it's firm in either far or close for Korea, but more like a complete absence of any "rule" or pattern. People vary greatly, more likely lean towards closeness though. I've had adjessoi's touch my inner thigh after first meeting them. I've had teachers pick up my papers off my desk and look at them. All these people I respect and trust. I could interpret it as rude, but they simply aren't aware or think that I would be offended by it. How can I be sore about something well-intended?
In the OP's case though, the dude seems obviously annoying and impolite. The drunk probably was not aware of how impolite he really was. Only my guess. The drunk man could have possibly tried to peev off the OP into fighting.
In which case, I feel sorry for the OP, but he should have resolved it. Finding another PC bang would have been my choice too. |

Welcome to Ameri....err....Korea
I've had the random screamers at times and it's ALWAYS best to walk away. Just like most other places, if you are in your 20's, cops hate you. When the risks are as high as sudden homelessness and unemployment and what I assume is a nasty "DEPORTED" stamp on your travel record, pride of principal, whether right or wrong, just ain't worth it. I don't assume the OP gave anything back, I just mean one hand should remain on the eject button at all times. Throw a man won at your bill and bounce.
Sorry to hear this horror story. |
