It sounds like a lot of the forum members have been teaching in Korea for a long time and do not plan to leave the ESL paradise? Is it viable to teach there until one retires or is there age discrimination that prevents this?

There's a million and 1 different reasons people come here to teach, and with each reason- a different average stay. Don't be fooled by Dave's forums; the vast majority of teachers stay 1-2 years. Frequent posters on Daves disproportionally have more years here under their belts, for sure.

I know a 55 year old who is teaching and could stay a few more years. Their is a age discrimination here, but it won't outright stop someone from getting a teaching job by any means. That person may just have to search a little harder.

I would say the average stay is about 1-2 years. most people get the travel bug after a year and tend to stay or extend afterwards to allow them to travel more.

The lost souls stay here forever. Working in a foreign country is like living in a blackhole that eventually sucks away all your motivation for goals like grad school.

I think if I stay another year, I'm gonna end up staying forever cuz of that.

The OP's question is hard to answer. The number who bail out in the first year is significant, bringing down the average. Quite a few who make it through the first year stay on for a second. My impression is that the number who stay a third year and more is pretty small but growing. Specific numbers? Who knows?

This forum has very helpful members. Thanks. . My questions are general for the purpose that I want everyone's participation, the young, the older crowd, single, married, female or male; I am sure each have their own interesting take on teaching and living in Korea.

1.2 years is robots calculation. 10 teachers.

2 stay 2 years or longer, 3 stay for a year, 2 pull runners within 1st 2 months, 2 leave between month 2 and 6, and 1 leaves before shortly 11th month. This does not account for long termers who stay and stay indefinitely or return again and again for more ESL action.

Robot could be wrong though as it lacks data and may have it's computational co-processing unit off kilter so don't take this bored bots post seriously.
