I've was sick 2 weeks ago, and this yellow dust isn't helping. In short, I've got a cough that just won't stop. Anyone know any Korean medicines that work well? The stuff at the pharmacy seems to largely be a joke, doesn't do anything. Herbal meds are ok, if they work.

2 things that work well for me - and I've had bad coughs a couple of times here -

1) get a humidifier for your home, and empty it out every night (don't run it while you sleep, just when you are there and awake) rinse it well once in a while and clean it

2) you-ju cha - citron tea - you'll see it in the big glass jars at markets and in the grocery store, tea section. add a heaping spoon to a cup and pour in boiling water - this is the BEST thing for upper respiratory problems, it's awesome, I swear by it every winter.

btw, I'm an exsmoker and if I get the flu or something bronchitis isn't far behind so yes, I understand your cough - be careful it can develop into asthma or bronchitis

also rest as much as possible even if you feel good - a cough is not something to mess around about.

Otherwise eat about 200g of dark 90% chocolate to get the same effect and love handles to boot

Every year, I go for my home visit before renewing my contract (public school). I always pick up a couple of bottles of nyquil and other cold medicines. Think I'm coming down with something. Sure glad I have it now. But if you go to the doctor, he may prescribe something stronger. Most over the counter medicines here suck. But there is some good medicine for a sore throat called "Mok Cheong Plus" You can ask for it at any Pharmacy. About the only thing I do like from here.

the same thing is happening to me - I feel fine, but this cough is completely out of control - I had a a really bad sore throat, then the sore throat went away and all the other symptoms hit - stuffy head, etc. And now i'm just hacking and coughing everywhere and can't get rid of it. So....

Hi, I've had the same problem several times in Korea. For me, Tylenol Cough tablets (day and night time) worked great for suppressing the cough but it kept coming back. I haven't found it in Korea though. I bought them for about $12 in Canada for a box of 20.

The over-the-counter stuff in Korea didn't do much. However, going to the doctor is your best option. I went two days ago again and said,

기침 함니다 (I have a cough).

He looked down my throat, had me cough, checked me out and prescribed something. With insurance, the visit was about 4000 won. The prescription cost at the pharmacy was about 4000 won, too. My cough has almost dissapeared and I feel much better.

Every time I've every been to a doctor in Korea I have always been given prescriptions that heal me up really fast. Once I was injected in the bum with something when I had food poisoning and was healthy again in a couple of hours.

If you go to a doctor look for a sign that says 내과 (sugen/medicine) or 의원 (clinic). Bring your insurance booklet and ARC.
