I know of some people who got paid overtime for working the summer/winter camps.
Is this the case with GEPIK? I just thought I'd check here before I make a fool of myself and ask the school.
It makes sense right? "Special classes"

"Makes Sense", yeah but only some people get paid extra. If you are working less than 22 classes per week on your camp then you are not working extra. Some school will give a bonus though, or so I have heard. Mine gave me two extra days off. I would'nt be asking for extra pay though, but if you do, good luck.

If you're good friends with your handler, probably won't hurt to ask just to know, just don't go demanding b/c it most likely won't happen then :p

If you're not very familiar with them, then it would probably be a "no" if they don't mention it themselves. You're under contract to work all the hours unless it's a national holiday or you're taking a paid vacation/sick day.. so for those schools that do pay extra/give a bonus/whatever, it's them being nice Very Happy

This is my 3rd year at the same school. I have also have a GEPIK contract. I have never been payed extra for doing summer/winter camps. I do the 20hrs per week as stated in the contract. In fact this winter, my principal wanted me to do 5 weeks of camp instead of the usual 3. I argued and ended up only having to do 3 weeks.

dang

another thing...

so, say the summer break lasts for 4 weeks and winter is for 4 weeks.
If they want me to work 3 out of the 4 weeks, what happens to the 10 days of vacation that I "can't use when school is in session"?

80hrs @ 20,000 won/hr? Very Happy

Then you'll be forced to use your paid vacation days on those days (like most schools, UNLESS your school let's you have those days for free). School isn't in session during the breaks, but YOUR only vacation days are the paid vacation days/national holidays. They're paying you for every day, even on the breaks, so it's a workday for you, but break for the school. There will still be teachers there on duty and probably other camps going on.

I'm not too fussy, I just don't want my 20 days to get spread "here and there"
as long as it's 10 in the summer and 10 in the winter, or something along those lines.

Yups but there's also spring break (a week @ my school, 2 weeks at some others.. depends on your school >_>). I opted to work everyday instead. Your school is supposed to plan around your vacation days, but it's more of you plan around their camps.. but if you do want to take a long break and it interferes with their plans, tell them early on before they start planning the times on paper.

Again, it really depends on your school, but they may also make you use vacation days on random stuff like.. that time when they held the highschool exams at the middle school next to me so school was closed to prevent any distractions.

edit: uhh sorry forgot to add.. if you don't use all of your days, you can have like 10 or something roll over for the year after (next contract year)

I think my school is pretty decent so I'm sure I won't get taken advantage of, it's just I'm the first foreign teacher they've ever had, so I just want to have my bases covered. Thanks!!

I just checked the contract, I guess I have 7 rollover days?
I dunno if I can stay in Korea for 3 years total though. I'm gonna try to use them now!
