German bakeries seem to be pretty popular here and I've found loaves of good bread there before - Tends to be loaves of bread in the morning and cookies and cheese bread at night.
Alternately, come to Chuncheon - there's an amazing restaurant here and the wife of the owner was professionally trained overseas in baking and breadmaking - their olive loaf is so good that it's life-altering. |

Sourdough is beyond rare, especially in Hanam. There are a few places where you might find bread:
-Foreign markets in Itaewon.
-E-mart. Maybe. |

I should go to Chuncheon at some point anyway... this makes a nice excuse. Where is the place and what is it called? Any other good places to eat in town?
OP: Crown Bakery has the least-white bread I've found, but it's probably just refined whole wheat with sugar. |

actually E-mart in Daejeon last year was comming out with some interesting bread...they has a sourdough loaf and a grainy loaf...not cheap but it was there....actually there is a good bakery in the old downtown of daejeon as well...shindong bakery? maybe...anyways, keep looking you're bound to find something. There's always barely bread or Costco. I myself have taken to baking my own seeing as I live in Gyeongju and all. |

Hey,
I always suggest this, so sorry, but why not make some yourself. Granted, you'd need some supplies and an oven, but once you get yourself sorted, you're good as gold.
I'm a bread-addict, so from one to another, good luck. |

Cafe Himond in Hanam did have pretty good bread as I recall - especially a walnutty wholemeal loaf...
Other than that, head to Apkujong or any Take Urban shops and they have a good range.
Alternatively, buy an oven and make your own~! |

Where can you find the whole wheat flour? I've searched far and wide for this to no avail. I've seen buckwheat flour, but... |

I've found whole wheat flour at big supermarkets...it's usually in little bags and it's usually organic and a bit expensive...just try people, try. |

the bakeries at the big hotels have real breads. sourdough, rye, pumpernickel, etc. not as insanely priced as you'd think either, taking into account the ridiculously high prices for six slices of "wheat" at paris baguette. i personally like the bakery at the grand hyatt over by namsan. |

Peace of Mind cafe - It's right on the river in the south end of the city.. If you tell a taxi driver "Sam Ick aparteu" he'll take you right there (Some know "Peace of Mind" in English but some don't.) and the patio of the restaurant is directly facing the river, you can't miss it.
The owner and his wife have traveled all over the world and they make baked goods for sale as well as a full menu of incredible, simple food. Pastas, pizzas and sandwiches, plus homemade tea. I could talk about the place forever. Owner and his wife are semi-fluent too, and are happy to chat.
check out Jason Ryan's post about it if you'd like to see photos: http://kimchi-icecream.blogspot.com/2009/01/peace-of-mind-cafe-in-chuncheon-south.html
I haven't been here long enough to know of any other really great places, but there's a "wine buffet" directly across from M department store in the downtown area ("myeong dong") and they have a pretty decent buffet (seafood, salad, pasta, etc) and w5000 all-you-can-drink wine that includes some very good vino choices. The downtown area has a lot of good options regardless of what type of fod you're craving, so it's worth exploring!
op: sorry I semi-hijacked your post, good luck with your quest. |

Me too, I like my bread grainy & wholesome.
Dont rule out all Paris Baguettes -- offerings can vary quite a bit from branch to branch. One in my town specializes in "health breads" & does a great heavy sourdough rye.
Another possibility is the health food chain called Han Sallim. They seem to be spreading -- there are 2 or 3 of them now in Sokcho (pop 80000). Baked goods are a sideline for them but they can provide some nice authentically wholegrain loaves. If they dont presently stock them, they're happy to order them in for you.
Our Emart bakery is hopeless. Some of their bread looks promising but color aside, its all spongy & white-like. |
