My girlfriend is thinking of leaving her hagwon and moving to another school. She's on an E2 visa. What's the wrap on penalties, expiration of visa etc? Any advice would be great.

flight airfare could be docked from pay.

the visa could be canceled requiring applying for a new number asap then a visa run before the "Exit order" kicks in. Or a quick in/out to go "tourist" then get a new crc and start from scratch. Or you might have to bribe/wait for a letter of release. Or you might have to cancel the visa yourself and start again.

Penalties? Problems getting a new visa during the current contract period, eviction, visa cancellation (good or bad depending on if you have something lined up already) Black mark on profile if you don't cancel/get new visa properly (with ARC and all that)

others can tell you more.

Just left a hawg for a p.s. The method I used was illness oriented. ! gave thirty days notice and got a doctor (with help from a Korean friend) to give me a letter that said I have a medical problem. They didn't like it, but the doctor ruled. Have another job set up, transfer your visa, (a letter of release is needed for this or it's off to Japan) and you're all set. The tourist visa probably isn't the way to go since it's only good for 90 days then you need a new visa still. You have to have a sponsor for your E-2 or there will be problems. I've heard those immigration fines can sting. Good luck and try for a p.s. I just traded 53 classes a week for 22. And for the same money. I'm not lazy but some time for a life is nice. Without the l.o.r. you'll have to go to immigration with your current boss to cancel your visa.
