Michael Feldman interviews Julia Angwin on the inside story behind Facebook on his radio program Whad'Ya Know?

She said of MySpace: "MySpace is apparently a good way to meet girls." The two guys who came up with MySpace was a web pornographer, and the other was into spyware and spam. They started during the dot.com era, when people were fleeing the internet. (On the side, they were also selling wrinkle cream.) They stole the idea for MySpace from Friendster, which required people to use their real names. MySpace was the first to experiment with identities; "Co-Mingle" was an early tentative name. A defining characteristic of MySpace is that users can customize their pages. None of them look alike, whereas Facebook pages all have the same format. Twitter - the current hottest thing - removed the concept of "friendship" and honored the narcissism inherent in these profiles. There are teams of people in the Philippines who monitor profiles for pornographic postings. "Using MySpace is actually very useful," Julia says. You might find yourself traveling someday and need a place to stay! And it's cheap entertainment. Facebook and Twitter are still independent, and right now, Twitter doesn't make any money at all; they don't sell any advertising. Value is all psychological. |
One of these days someone needs to explain to me how Facebook works, and why, exactly, I should care. Listening to this segment was a start, though. |

| Facebook has connected me to a lot of people I lost contact with and to people I knew before we even used email. |

Since most myspace users have bad taste and even worse graphic design skills, most myspace pages are painful to look at and usually to listen to...
One plus I've give to cyworld, the majority of pages and music is usually very tastefully down.... |

Yeah, a lot of those sites and blogs etc just turn to junkpiles. Some people live within them, collecting hundreds of 'friends' most of whom they have never met ...
There are people whose e mail addresses I'd never bother to find. That's like living in the past. |
