No problem, the drycleaning business is booming these days.

The amazing thing is what a non-event figure skating truly is. I looked all over Yahoo's main page, in the sports section, etc., and could find nary a peep about this figure skating deal going on right now. Nothing even about her record setting.

Koreans go apeshit over the Korean of the day. Remember Hines Ward? Michelle Wie? They could give a toss about the actual sport, though. Like their North Korean brothers and sisters, they simply have a hard-on for making the news.

"Yeah, the world knows we exist!"

"Yes, we do. Now piss off back to your dog restaurants."*

Even with soccer, they don't watch unless their side is playing (and winning). Fair weather fans are lame-ass, and should be punished.

She's a fine young lady with a lot of talent.

Unfortunately for her, I am annoyed at seeing her due to no fault of her own. The Korean media and the Korean fans suck.

It seems these days, they don't care about what she does, as long as she beats that Japanese figure skater.

Also, as soon as she came onto the scene, all of a sudden, every Korean thinks they're experts on figure skating. They say 'her skating is liek art' and when some other country's skater comes up, the channel somehow gets changed.

I know that's common but not the case in my house. My family watches all the skaters.

The whole Chway....Choi debate is one thing, but Kim YuNa....when seeing it written that way, wouldn't many native English speakers be naturally inclined to pronounce her name as Kim YouNa?

It shows what a poor system any romanization is.
Romanization doesn't take into account the target language. So it doesn't adjust itself for the way native speakers of the target language normally pronounce adjacent letters. There isn't much they can do about it other than rewrite everything for different languages. Spelling it yaw-na for an English audience might work there, but then the germans or french might not pronounce it right.

She has the potential to be a fantastic role-model and ambassador. Her English has really become good living in Canada. Hopefully she's spared the fate of other young Korean celebs.

I want to try to make this interview into a listening exercise for my students this week.

With names, medals, national zeal and talent (and talent aplenty she has as she really looked phenomenal!) aside....she really should learn to hold her national flag properly.... Smile

I'm not much of a fan of figure skating (meaning: "not at all") and I just happened to catch it, but she really looked fantastic both in energy and attitude as well.

I went for a walk around noon. I expected to see people crowded around restaurant and cafe televisions, they way they were for the World Baseball Classic. Nope. And the TVs were showing "King of Farts" and "Gagmen Fall Down."

Did she fall even once this time?

I ask, because one of the sponsors at the showed a full 2 minutes of EVERY OTHER COMPETITOR falling and getting upset after it was all over. It was a montage, and they showed Yu-na cry for about .5 seconds, but they never showed her fall. The entire montage was nothing but everyone else falling.

It came across like gloating.

Nope. See it here, and the teary-eyed medal awards ceremony, too.

When Korea loses, Dave's users start asking when the whining will begin and mock them until they're blue.

When Korea wins - an olympic gold medalist sets a new world record - the sport is a non-event.

Do you (all) read your posts before you submit them, or do you just focus on your anger?

(Again I say...and I'M THE TROLL?)

Yes- because Korea doesn't do well enough to get noticed most of the time

Remember the 2008 Olympics? Korea NEVER showed ANY other sport unless their team was an an active participant. That is quite lame-

Korea also placed themselves on a grid as though they came in 3rd in earning Gold medals after the US and China, when in fact, it was Russia!

Sometimes they take nationalism to a whole new level- i.e. figure-skating all the sudden is the destiny for every young Korean girl now. That is weird.

Not to mention figure skating is boring as hell- IMO Cool Laughing Rolling Eyes

Koreans are notoriously poor winners and losers. Either there is a wailing and gnashing of teeth and the blaming of everyone else or there is a gloating and attribution of chopstick use to superior athletes or superior Korean genetics coming through once again. I'll give Koreans credit for one thing. They never do anything half-assed.

They seemed to take the WBC loss quite well.
