An honorary professor at the nation's top university is facing rising anger from female students for his sexist statements.
They claim the comments were degrading to women ― and say they are more than mere misdemeanors because they involved school grades.
On an online bulletin board for Seoul National University students Sunday, an article about the man, who has been identified as an elderly professor Kim at the institution, was uploaded under the name of ``The Man Who Keeps Talking About Women's Figures.'' The writer claimed that the professor made odd and offensive comments.
``All he says in the classroom are some stupid words such as, `women should get plastic surgery,' and, `do some remodeling on your face.' I feel mortified whenever I hear it,'' the writer said.
Under the article, there was an instantaneous string of ``testimonies.''
One contributor wrote, ``Once he said he didn't like female students in our class. He said, `Girls in other classes get me drinks and behave really kindly to me. However, you are all too stiff. You need a sense of femininity,' he said.''
Another added, ``One day, he told women to get married and become homemakers rather than going to graduate school. All our classmates took it very personally."
The professor reportedly asked his students in a science class to write a report about how to ``upgrade'' their appearance.
His name was widely publicized when another student revealed that he put, ``What appearance means to a woman,'' and ``Why dating means so much to women in getting married and making a social career,'' as science examination questions for another of his classes at a different school.
``It is a clear insult to women,'' a sophomore in one of his classes told the Yonhap News Agency. According to the school, an angry parent even called the university president to request his dismissal.
The institution said there is little it can do since he is an honorary professor who cannot be sacked. ``We will be thinking of possible measures,'' a school spokesman said.
However, the professor has denied that he has done anything wrong. He said he was simply trying to enlighten students and help them look beautiful and attractive. ``I have been making such comments for more than 10 years and I find it very surprising that students are making it an issue right now,'' he told the Yonhap News Agency.
He said his ``advice'' is actually making a difference. ``Many students told me that my advice worked when getting a job.''

What other measures can be done to this "honary professor?"
Since he has been making such comments for more than 10 years why should anything be done now? Let's not change Korea, something bad might happen to others ie. E-2 visa holders complaining about being discriminated against/F series visa holders fearing retribution.
Darn those students who are only now making it an issue.
Actually, since the honary professor has been saying such things for many years he shoudn't have ever became an "honary professor!" But, this is Korea, what does anyone expect? Even long time expats are fearful of change for the better.

So how does some one with tenure get fired, It must be possible. Or is it like diplomatic immunity?
theft, sexual harassment, rape, murder, murderous rampage through the uni and then eating the bodies (or would it be "once you have finished your jail term we expect you back here bright and early Monday morning") |

They get fired for misconduct under the ethics clause of the (usual) contract. |

this will solve itself.. in one way.
the guy is an assclown and the scorn he receives from young women will take care of his reputation and "career" in short order.
however..
when he ties in his OPINIONS to grades in his class and to writing papers on the topic, that's an entirely different and fairly severe matter and the administration can easily (and SHOULD) take action. |

in other languages and cultures, when said in the bedroom, this is a COMPLIMENT.
e.g. Brazilian portuguese - the word "cachorro", which literally means dog/puppy is used by a woman tell the man what a "dog" he is... and you WANT to hear this 
in Latin America. the word "descarado", which means brazen/shameless - typically meant as an insult in a raised voice..... in a quiet voice with a smile said by a woman is a compliment.
do Koreans also employ such nuance? I'm going to guess NOT. |

I start every class by walking in the door and saying, in a shocked voice, 'All girls? GoDDD! Why dont theyhave me teaching a bunch of cats?"
Then I spend 5 minutes on grammar:
"Girls are not/never/not even close as good as boys" Choose the correct one.
ThenI spend the next 45 minutes belittling their sex.
All in all,it really improves my own limp self-esteem. And, like this Honorary Prof. Kim, my 'self-esteem' is my erectile disfunction. Also, like Mr. Kim, I'm secretly terrified of an empowered woman so I do my best to try and keep them down.

What gave you the inclination that I thought you should?
I said..."even long time expats are fearful of change" so why would anyone expect Koreans to change anything like Korean professors insulting females in the classroom. |

Unfortunately, this is one of those cultural things that still has some time to go before they start to correct it (if they ever do). It reminds me of a few years back in San Francisco when I was doing some undergraduate work (went back for another degree), and I was taking this cultural studies class on Asian culture. The class was being taught by a Chinese woman with a doctorate in Asian studies. She was very intelligent, very understanding of pretty much everyone, but throughout the entire class there was a group of about ten Asian guys who did everything possible to disrespect her throughout the semester. The lack of respect was so obvious, and they took great pleasure in belittling here at every junction they could create in that class.
It was so obvious that their lack of respect came from the fact that she was an Asian woman, and it had nothing to do with anything else. She was a gazillion percent more intelligent than all of them put together, yet she garnered zero respect from them whatsoever.
Honestly, I learned more about Asian culture from those interactions than I did from any of the course material (and I actually learned a lot from the course material). At some point in the semester, there were guys from the jock side of the house starting fights with these guys just to get them to shut up long enough so the classes could continue. |
