Pop star Madonna is back in the news; this time, heading back to the African nation of Malawi to adopt her second child.
You might remember all of the drama a few years ago when Madonna adopted a Malawi boy. Now she wants to adopt a girl, and a judge has said she will have to wait until Friday to see if she will get the go-ahead.
Madonna has been quoted in the Malawi newspaper Nation as saying, "Many people, especially our Malawian friends, say that David should have a Malawian brother or sister. It's something I have been considering, but would only do if I had the support of the Malawian people and government."
It seems that anytime we hear about celebrities like Madonna adopting, the children are from another country. I'm not at all opposed to children being adopted from Africa, China or any other country, but it does raise the question: What's wrong with adopting American children...? |

At least, she's adopting SOMEONE. It's not enough to those who think from where she adopts really matters. Who cares from what country she adopts?

Is it because those kids' situations are far worse than most orphans in America? Who cares why celebrities do anything? |

I confused by the title of this thread.
Is there a problem with Madonna adopting kids from Malawi? I have a kid I support through World Vision in that country, and am impressed with anyone who makes an effort to better someone's life.
OP, is there something wrong with what Madonna has done? |

Hilarious. At least she didn't name her son "Kettle", or "November" or "Osiris". |

I agree.
Why bring nationalism into it, as the thread title does? Someone with adequate means is adopting a needy kid. Good. What else is there to say that is relevant? |

I don't know, its wierd.
The article the OP selected answers his own question. Americans adopt foreigners because the laws and regulations for adopting Americans are very stringent. |

Perhaps there's a lot more baggage with children within the States. Their parents for example may make a sudden come-back and appear in the child's life, especially when there's a cash heavy celebrity involved.
It's very comely adopting within one's own place but often I'd expect people like social services etc to be in your life a lot ... going back to things that can occur as in the first paragraph.
It may be merely less burden to adopt from some far off country. |

Most children in the US system are not true "orphans" --they have parents who have voluntarily given up (not) caring for them, whose parental rights have been temporarily suspended, or terminated by the courts. A child whose parents still have rights even though they are in foster care cannot be legally adopted. Terminating parental rights by the courts is a messy, lengthy process. Some kids have really great foster parents, and then the biological p's get them back--and they have to go back. It sucks.
Adopting a child who is eligible is a lengthy process as well, and as past court challenges to voluntary adoptions have shown, not always ironclad. "I don't do drugs anymore, I didn't know what I was signing, I want my kid (s) back..."
Adopting an infant can be the most difficult--the mother makes the final decision from a series of potential adoptive parents. This can involve being interviewed/turned down by several mothers before an adoption is completed, often years later. Compare this with int'l adoption which can take as little as 1 yr, with a better guarantee that parental rights have been terminated, with more choice in age range.
Most children eligible for adoption in the US are older--the majority of people who wish to adopt usually are looking for younger children--viewed to be more baggage-free than older ones.

I take your points.
I think that there is something of the exotic and the fashionable and trendy when high-profile celebrities adopt third-world orphans. Impure motives and good publicity. Did SouthPark not ridicule this in some way at one time or another? |

What makes me uncomfortable about celebrities adopting internationally is what seems to be "I'm saving the world" motives.
Adoption should be *first and foremost* about one's family! |

I cannot believe there is something in the universe that we not only agree upon, but also seem to phrase it the same way.
Walking away from the forum astounded this morning, thinking "she must be baiting me for something..." |

Madonna was going to adopt an American orphan but feared she'd be accused of discriminating against Malawian orphans.
