So I'd like some opinions. For the last three months, we haven't had our gas gauge read. We got a pretty big bill (not obscene, but enough that I want to double check it), and so I called our realtor. I wanted them to call teh gas company with the correct reading, and then calculate the exact amount we owe. She keeps telling me that even if they figure we owe less than on the bill, they can't reissue another bill for the correct amount. We have to just pay it, and then things will work normally from next month. No recalculation, no rebate, nothing. I find this really hard to believe. I've had this situation before in the UK, and they just recalculate it, no problem. So, what do you think?

So if you're over charged you have to pay it anyway?
oh that makes sense.

Yeah, that's kind of my point. It seems retarded, no? Seriously, just when I think Korea was as ridiculous as it could possibly be, it finds another way to blow my mind.

I hear you.

December I had 110,000 bill in gas
and then in January it was 26,000 bill

Total for 3 months I paid something like 170,000

Worst part is, I kept the ondol on the lowest heat and it barely kept my 1 room in my house warm.

After putting up with gas company crap for a number of years now, I've come to the only sane conclusion: the amount on your gas bill and it's frequency of arrival is determined by a series of random number generators.

Over the past few years: I've received bills informing me they owe me money for past overcharges (which of course they won't easily give to you, you just wait until you've used it up on future bills), received back to back bills for drastically differing amounts despite changing nothing about the way I use the gas each month, they've threatened to shut off my gas for unpaid bills that I never received and gotten a few hilarious half-English text messages from official people asking for the wrong amount of money.

Despite the madness it all seems to work out in the end. I don't bother complaining anymore.

I use an electric blanket, and use water in the morning to take a bath, and at night to clean...My bill is under 10,000 won as I hardly cook.

Good for you. The planet thanks you.

They called back and said the gas company calculated it from the real reading, and it's now almost double what they told me (that already seemed way too high). She keeps telling me that next month it'll all be fine, but I have to pay the estimations for the last couple of months. I keep telling her give me the actual amount, and not an estimation. This gets us nowhere. She just keeps being flummoxed by my request and saying "But, you want the actual number? You don't want pay estimation?"
Is it really such an insane concept?

Seriously. And to top it all off, they started refusing to dispose of the cat litter bags (previous post of mine) and have added a big sign to the front of it saying "Attention! Bags of FOREIGNERS" to boot. I'm kidding you not, caps and all.

Korea, I'm kicking your ass on the way out.

Strange you should say it's different in the UK. Fairly often my leccy and gas bill has been estimated and then the guy comes round and they realise it's wrong. Then the next month the bill is basically nothing after they put on the deductions. It's a fairly common occurrence and unless this is your last month in Korea is easier to pay and then get a reduced rate next month.

But some people love Korea bashing.

No dude, you don't get it. It's not a case of from next month, I'll have a super low bill to make up for the excess I'll pay for the estimations. It's that from next month they will start, in general, charging me the correct amount and not making estimations. The extra they want paid will not be recouped to me in any way. And yes, in the UK I have had quite my share of gas bills issues, and they have always dealt with it in a rational manner.

So, before you start accusing people of 'Korea bashing', know what you're talking about. And give people a freaking break who are having issues, whilst happening to live in Korea, without branding them some sort of perma critic of the country. Ok? Awesome.

I think that what he was saying was that one gas company does not Korea make.

You are having issues with them not Korea, yet you say "Seriously, just when I think Korea was as ridiculous as it could possibly be.."
and "Korea, I'm kicking your ass on the way out."

But don't let us interupt your angry rant...you were saying?

You know, you're right. Why I ever expected to post on Dave's without getting told I'm doing something or thinking something not quite akin to right (ie, what you'd do, fair sirs) I don't quite know. Yeah, Korea pissed the hell out of me today, as it does on multiple occasions. And yeah, I moaned about it. But where are my all-encompassing opinions on every gas company (or even one) in the post? No the f**k where. All I wanted was to see if anyone else has had the same problem, and what they did about it. Since all you seem to have to contribute is tedious lecturing, I'd rather you kept it to yourself. Thanks all the same.
