|
|
Gopher has been going bananas over the idea, however true, that the US might become another "banana republic." His knee jerk reaction notwithstanding, perhaps rampant consumerism, spending instead of saving, massive borrowing and deficits, and the actions of the evil Federal Reserve and the evil presidents: Wilson, FDR, LBJ, Nixon, Bush and now Obama which has culminated in this turning point in political economic history was foreshadowed by:
the original Banana Republic:
from Wikipedia:
Quote: |
The original Banana Republic was founded by Mel and Patricia Ziegler in 1978. It was a two-store safari and travel-themed clothing company. The majority of sales came from its eccentric catalog, which presented high-end and unique items with chatty, usually fictional, backstories from exotic locations, as well as more pedestrian high-volume products deliberately spiced up with a similar treatment. As Banana Republic expanded its retail operation, it became known for the themed decoration in its stores, often featuring authentic elements, such as real Jeeps and foliage, as well as atmospheric elements, such as fog and steam.
Gap Inc. acquired Banana Republic in 1983, eventually rebranding it as a mainstream luxury clothing retailer. The eccentric tourist-oriented items were phased out and were replaced with more luxurious items for which the brand is currently known. To set itself apart from Gap as a more upmarket brand, Banana Republic occasionally buys and refurbishes historic buildings for its retail locations |

Now we know what a real Banana Republic is.

I think Gopher needs a 'temp ban' for spamming the boards to further his agenda. |

That would be silly. We all need a little spam from time to time. No need to overreact. |

He is another who believes the mods ought to do his bidding, and that it is appropriate to play them to go after those he disagrees with and/or dislikes. Like a tattletaler from kindegarten...
Whatever. |

Or someone who respects the rules and enjoys seeing them enforced so as to prevent egotists from making this section of the forum their own little fiefdom.
Different perspectives I guess. |

Then you haven't looked through his posts. Spamming the forum is a breach of rules, as is flaming and name calling - Gopher has broken these before.
That being said, I'm not pushing for a ban or anything, nor have I reported him on the recent spamming... but he has stepped over the line on occasion (as have others on this forum).
We have to look at why this forum exists and what we're doing here. Is it for an exchange of ideas? Is it to learn from each other about issues? Or is is about beating other people into believing exactly as you do? |

We look into whatever comes to our attention, and we do what we can.
We do give out warnings for violations of the rules, and we eventually give out bans, but only the moderator team confers. It's not a perfect process.
If there is a question about something, send the reports as usual. We won't get involved in this one, we will just watch the boards and look for reports and look at the posts.
If someone is at the receiving end of punitive action on these forums, they've knowingly violated the TOS.
Thanks for your concern, everyone. If spamming is occuring where a person is flooding a site, then alert us, but there was no consensus on the board so much as to say that someone should not go overboard and post as it is not courteous to other members, and members mostly opposed that. |

If you get so upset over a few banana threads, then why not simply temp ban yourself? This place would be exceedingly dull if such as you were to get their petulant way.
Here is a little something, just for you. |

hehe, even better the Captain should try this!
Horrible! Even worse, the horrible woman could almost be me...she has the exact same hair, except that mine is dark and maybe slightly longer by a couple of inches. |

Sorry, where in my post did I say I was upset?
You want to call me out for being rude? By all means BB, back that up. Gopher has on numerous times called me petulant names simply because I asked a question.
Where were you and your judgements then? |

Petulant names? What are you talking about?
I think it reflects ignorance or willful obtusity to "ask questions" such as "what does 'banana republic' possibly have to do with Central America?" Honestly, I cannot believe that you would be asking such "questions" in good faith.
And before you get too deeply into brooding on your alleged victimhood, ask yourself if you have not called me, on this very thread, "an egoist" intent on "making this section of the forum my own little fiefdom."
Sounds pretty serious. If we are keeping track of name-calling and holding grudges, that is... |

So, I remember when IGTG was lambasted for spamming the boards. I don't remember if Gopher was one of the attackers, but his recent round of spamming sure seemed ironic in that light.
Of course, I find the antics of both to be equally humorous and revealing about their personalities. Each of them seems to have a piece of the personality that the other is missing. Perhaps if we could fuse them together we could fashion a whole being. |

I do not accept this attempted comparison at all. Not to mention your comparing me to someone who was likely mentally ill (perhaps that is the point of your comparison; if so, ironic on a thread where another poster is complaining about name-calling; rich coming as it does from a guy who calls R. Nixon a Socialist. Sometimes this forum seems well balanced. At others it seems like a kindergarten playground, a madhouse, or a zoo).
IGTG spammed seven to ten threads at a time with the same story. IGTG chronically displayed malice towards Jews, Holocaust-denial, other offensive tendencies -- in messages that appeared again, again, and again here.
Moreover, at least half a dozen regular posters here complained, including at the time, Bulsajo, MannerofSpeaking, Ya-ta Boy, and, as you suspect, myself.
I think your comparison is a crude pretext designed to bring back conspiracy-theory spamming. You want to do that for two banana threads -- on point to ridicule a discussion where people where claiming "banana republic's" universal applicability? Be my guest. |
