Do this before you leave:
Get a good photo of him.
Get his full Korean name (he may have an English alias that he changes from time to time)
Get is address and telephone number.
Get the name address and telephone number of the school, fax number and business number.
Pics of the school are good too.
If you can get this all on a disc or memory stick, better.
Be sure your boss sees you gathering all this information. Show it to him.
Tell you boss politely that if he doesn't pay you all the money owed, you will be forced to write letters to the Canadian, American, Australian, New Zealand, South African embassies documenting your concerns and warning others to stay away from this school. Tell him that you will send all the above information along with each letter.
Tell him you will also be contacting the Korean tax office, and pension office to find out what is going on with the money deducted from your pay.
Also tell him that you will post this information all over the internet, so that future teachers can stay away.
Remember, the fear of punishment is more powerful than actual punishment. You may not have to follow through on all the above steps, hopefully you will scare him enough to pay up before you leave.
Tell him that you don't want to do this, but if he won't pay up you'll have no choice. Sit back and watch him squirm. |

One more thing. Only follow the OP's advice if you never want to teach in Korea again.
Libel is punishable here no matter how true it is. |

Not true. You can tell him you are "going to" do this, but you don't have to follow through unless you leave the country.
You can always back down if he decides to pay up.
This is how I had to deal with my first hagwan in Korea. They paid up, I didn't post anything bad about them...I even defended them from time to time.
I'm still here and so are they. It's "negotiation", as another poster has already mentioned. |
