how do I go about hooking up my mac to the internet here in K-land? For example, all over the world my mac is pretty much plug and play. here in Korea I disconnected the ethernet cord from my work pc and plugged it into my mac and presto-no interent. when I plug it back into the pc, internet again so I know it is not the cord or connection. what to do? |

Have you transferred your PC's internet settings to the MAC? The main information you will need in order to access the internet is:
1. IP Address
2. DNS Settings
3. Subnet Mask
4. Default Gateway
You will need to gather that information and then go into System Preference and double click on Network selecting and then select either Ethernet or Local Network (working off memory) and then input the information you've collected. |

i did not have to do a thing with my home internet.
but your ISP should be able to set up the Mac for you, and test everything before they leave. |

One word of caution. Some Korean ISP's make you "relog in" to a web page in order to get internet service. It happens if you connect a new computer to the broadband modem, or reset it. I had the problem with KT and it's stupid Megastart site. I could get instant messenger service, but not browse online. I couldn't figure out why i couldn't see the Megastart page until i booted up Parallels+XP and tried using IE. Got the log in from the land lord and now i'm golden. |

Yeah, same thing happened with me. The password they gave me had a "5'' that looked like an "S", or something like that. Took me awhile to realize it. |

Troubleshooting:
1. When you plug the ethernet into your mac, do you see a login page?
If yes: Login.
If no:
2. With the ethernet plugged into your Mac, unplug the modem power cord for a few seconds, and then plug it back in. Wait about a minute for the modem to startup again.
If that doesn't solve the problem:
3. Open Network Preferences and click 'diagnose'. If there are problems, follow the instructions.
If there are no problems, then click 'Assist me'. This will set up a new location. You might just need to apply a new location in Network Preferences so your MAC recognizes this ethernet connection apart from it's last connection.

thanks for the help. internet is good now and the mac is hooked up to the tv, thank god, but I am not savvy enough to get my new wireless router set up, even though the instructions are in English. If anyone has the time to talk me through it, send me a pm, I would be very grateful. So grateful in fact that if you are near Pohang I would buy you dinner and beer. |

What brand and model is the router?
It really isn't that hard if you go to Network Preferences and just add a new location.. |
