about 2 months ago I signed a contract in America to work for a hagwan in South Korea. this position was found for me by a canadian based recruitment company. 2 days before my scheduled departure I get news that enrollment at this hagwan was down so they cut my job. surprisingly, the hagwan still offered to fly my here. so i took that offer, they flew me here and put me up in an apartment at their cost. before i left for south korea, my recruiter told me that they're going to try to find me a temporary job until next term when enrollment would be up at the hagwan. that didn't happen. so my director at the school found me a 1 year job through EPIK. but now the issue is recruitment fees. who pays who?

It doesn't matter as long as you don't pay anyone anything. Wink

Does Canada have the US equivalent of a Better Business Bureau? If so, report them.

NEVER, EVER, EVER PAY FOR A JOB. PERIOD.

OP, did the recruiter try to say YOU owed the RECRUITER money? That's BS. Don't pay them anything and post the name of that recruiter.

regardless, you don't owe anything.

My hagwan basically dicked around too long, so the position that EPIK was holding for me got filled yesterday. Until yesyerday, I expected to pay nothing out of my pocket. From what I gathered, EPIK needed recruitment fees for me to start working there...the amount was 1.5 million won. After some negotiation, the best deal I got was to split the recruitment fee 3 ways (the hagwan, my director and myself). My recruiter is not to blame here, it's the disorganization of my newly opened hagwan led by ill experienced management.

They are lying to you. EPIK does not need recruitment fees. EPIK pays the recruitment fees to the recruiters who find them teachers. This sounds like, EPIK was paying the recruiter/director and then they got greedy and wanted you to chip in an extra 500K which they'd split.

thank you thomas for your opinion...i swear to god i hate coming on here sometimes because of useless negative bastards like yourself. do yourself a favor and go e-picking somewhere else *beep*.

to the rest of you, thank you all for your opinions. this is obviously my first time taking an ESL job. i gave up on this school finding me anything (half the staff has quit within the past week). i am in touch with some local friends and recruiters to help me get a job.
