I have an old prepaid KTF phone that I haven't used in a while so it's been disconnected. I know they have some BS rule where you have to top up by 10,000 won per month or they don't let you use it. To me that's no different to having a contract phone. If I want to only use it occasionally and top-up by 10,000 won every 2 months that should be ok.

Anyway, are all the networks like this? I'm assuming I can go and get it unlocked and change to SK or something if they are better.

I don't know how your system works, but mine works through a phone card. I use an SK card and I've never heard of a minimum.

I have no contract with anyone, when it runs out I go to an SK dealership and put more money on the card. Whatever amount I want, I've never tried to put less than 10,000 on though, so maybe you know more about this than I do.

Anyway, hope this helps.

do you always put on at least 10,000 per month onto your cellphone though?
I was told you had to put 10,000 on per month or you get cut off, that's why I thought it was basically not much different to a contract.

Basically, everytime you buy 10,000won airtime, you are "allowed" on the network for another 30 days. So, if I buy 30,000 won airtime now, my account will be valid for another 3months. (My KTF prepaid phone currently expires in August sometime). dial 1500 to check your balance.

Another thing, if your balance drops to 0, any time your account had stored is reset, and the balance drops to 45 days.

I have the same situation through LG but you can change to phone card and it won't be a problem.

What? If I put 30,000 won on my phone, it's still only good for 30 days.

The advantage over a contract phone is that 10,000/month is cheaper than a contract. You can let it lapse when you leave the country.

I have a prepaid (pay as you go) phone. I left Korea for a few months and when i came back i couldnt make outgoing calls or texts....i kept getting a recorded message saying that my "outgoing service was suspended."

All i did was buy another 10,000 won top-up card and then it worked again.

Which provider are you with? I put 20,000 on my phone today, and my service was extended 60 days. (I'm with KTF, as said in my previous post)
