Someone came around last Friday and asked if I would like to go to Dok Do next month for a couple of days. Apparently they are sending 46 (of the 150 or so) teachers from Gyeong buk for two nights and three days.

I was all for it until this morning they said, "by the way, you will have to write a five page essay." I said thanks but no thanks.

Anyone else hear about it?

Awww... take them up on the offer and have fun with it by writing a five-page essay on why Dok Do is Japanese territory. Wink

There's another island a short distance away that has a ferry terminal. Apparently the EPIK group will meet some high school students. The actual Dok Do trip I think is just a an excursion for part of a day.

It starts on Thursday, which is a holiday for me. Friday is my schools sports day. Saturday is a family day. So, it's not like I would be getting out of any classes or anything, and I would still have 5 or 6 hours of travel back to my town after I got of the boat. No thanks.

I personally think the whole thing stinks of propaganda. They want literature written by Western hands to shake in Japans face. I for one don't want any part of it.

We learned earlier that these Dok-do trips are, yeah, pretty much nothing but propaganda. Expect your face to be used as evidence that foreigners, and by extension their governments, support Korea's side. Here's a write-up from a trip last year:

Edit: Sorry, that was a rather tasteless joke.

This article was hilarious. Seems like they didn't really have any intention of taking them to Dokdo. Just wanted to get the flag waving and sound bite out of the whities.

Looks like I ducked a big bullet. Me and Mr. Propaganda don't get along very well and I'd probably end up jobless....

40 are going

The 40 have to be approved by the POE

If you go you 'must' write an essay on it (5 pages of a4)

Are you going?

I can't imagine finding 5 pages of a4 to write about.

I want to go but I don't want to write the essay... so i probably wont.

I'd like to say that if I did write the essay I would write something along the lines of: 'I cant believe that these seagull shit stained rocks are the cause of so much irational hate etc' but if someone actually makes me write an essay (unlikely) I'll probably write something very functional and boring...

It's not the rocks themselves so much as the ability to claim the sea (and the fish it contains) around the rocks.
