That would have been incredible if it wasn't fake.

Well, the timing of the punch looked very good, and it probably connected. Jericho is the type who'd take a real punch to sell a performance, and Rourke was crazy enough to really cut himself with a sharp blade to make his role in The Wrestler more convincing..

Well, there's plenty of sexy women, drugs, and violence involved - what's not to like?

I appreciate it on the level of low camp and extreme slapstick comedy.

I think pro wrestling was the first TV show I ever watched as a kid - less than five years old - so it also has nostalgic value for me.

Sometimes described as "soap opera for men", it's a sleazy, exploitative business for the most part, but it serves a purpose as escapist entertainment for those who like in-ring action mixed with over-the-top story-lines and buffoonery.

Aside from that, bad habits are hard to break, and there's a sucker born every minute...

It is what it is ... http://www.wwe.com/

Perhaps I'd better edit in the definition of "camp" for the educationally challenged ...

camp2   [kamp]
noun
1. something that provides sophisticated, knowing amusement, as by virtue of its being artlessly mannered or stylized, self-consciously artificial and extravagant, or teasingly ingenuous and sentimental.
2. a person who adopts a teasing, theatrical manner, esp. for the amusement of others

Wow, RTeacher, without MM2 around to nitpick at all your posts you're really slipping.

Which trailer park was that in? That's about as sad as still watching it as a grown up.

What's even sadder is using "stash" as part of your avatar name ... Rolling Eyes

"Underwaterbob" would do well to start - and star - in his own underwater wrestling promotion.

Arguably, some pro wrestling veterans (eg: Ric Flair, Shawn Michaels, "Undertaker", Ricky "the Dragon" Steamboat) are great action-performance artists.

And Santino Marella combines wrestling with fine comedic and dancing skills.

And he has a lovely twin sister ...

I did join a wrestling league a good friend of mine helped start in University. His passion for the "sport" was indescribably contagious. He taught us all the basics: front sells, back sells and a bunch of moves. Being a wrestler, fake or not, is damned hard work.

We only ever had one show. We didn't expect anyone to show up, instead we ended up filling the auxiliary gymnasium. We put on a hell of a good show. It helped that a large portion of our audience showed up drunk. The last match ended in my friend (a very small guy) being power-bombed through a table (which we had weakened).

Our next practice one of the two guys who started the whole thing broke his leg. We voluntarily pulled the plug on the whole thing before the university did it for us.

But underwater wrestling - along with being more avant-garde - would be safer with respect to breaking limbs.

To avoid drowning, you'd just need really strong tubes for air.

Underwater grapplers could throw their opponents through giant clam shells ...

To make it more exciting, perhaps a giant squid can be situated in the water tank.

(Well, maybe not that big...)

Of course, women underwater wrestlers could wear mermaid outfits ...

State-of-the-art underwater camera techniques can be used, and matches can be simulcast in IMAX theaters.

I think the best bet for getting it going would be to attract wealthy Japanese investers (many love pro wrestling) and their robotics technology can provide underwater referees ...

There's actually a movie titled "Calimari Wrestler" - the reviews sums it up by saying it's basically about a man-sized squid fighting for the Japanese wrestling title ...

There will always be wrestling in the material world - because that's one of the sports that Krishna (the Supreme Personality of Godhead) enjoys to partake in when He visits ...
