At my current school we received a memo from what I believe was the BOE stating that foreigners were not allowed to do more than pat a child on the head (due to rampant amounts of pedophilia among foreign teachers.)

Of course, the memo didn't mention the number of Korean teachers and principals fond of spanking their female students on the ass and taking upskirt pics that have made the media the last few years. Because, you know, it's only the barbaric foreigners who do that kind of thing.

Nasty double standard.

Is there any way to voice this to the boss?

Does anyone have any info on even one confirmed case of a visa-holding, English teaching foreigner in Korea who has been convicted of any kind of sex crime?

Here you go eamo.

What are you talking about, kangnam mafioso? I am aware of CPN, and that Ramsey guy (neither of whom were convicted of a sexual crime in Korea to my knowledge). But I was only able to find two documented cases. See above and this link.

http://english.chosun.com/w21data/html/news/200508/200508160028.html

And you'll notice that in the second link that the guy (M) was charged and not convicted. So 1 or maybe 2 hardly qualifies as "a lot of trouble with pedophiles from the West"

I'm sure I could find a lot more documented cases of KOREAN teachers engaging in improper behaviour with their students (not just sexual assaults but beatings involving a closed fist or metal object.
However that seems to get swept under the rug here...

The Burberry men who tug it outside of the gates. Guys who sneak into the girl's washroom at schools - all Koreans.

Alot?!! What's alot? One guy? Tens of thousands of native English teachers pass through Korea each year. Do you have any stats or links?

You think wrongly. In just one sweep they busted over 50 teachers with fake degrees. The background story to that is that a Korean recruiter was recruiting people without degrees to come over and then he'd make degrees for them. Several guys got caught, squealed, and the authorities found the recruiter and a list of names he'd made degrees for.

I can vouch for the authenticity of this one. When I first met my girflfriend a couple of years ago she was living in a flat with a nice big TV that had been left there by someone caught in that sting. They showed up at 5 am, didn't even give him time to pack. I believe that they repatriated him by way of giant cartoon cannon.

Wow! Never thought I'd say this but, Urban Myth, I completely agree with you!!! Laughing

I find it mind-blowing that someone like Kangnam Mafioso, who's been here for maybe 10 years or more, can say that Korea has had a lot of trouble with "pedophiles from the West" when there isn't a single case, AFAIK, of a foreign English teacher being convicted of anything like that.........and only one or two isolated cases of a foreigner even being charged for that kind of thing.

When you consider how many tens of thousands of foreigners have been coming here to teach English since the 90's...........get a grip, KM.

I'm a bit confused eamo. You asked if there was even a single case, and KM provided a link to "An American English teacher convicted of attempting to rape one of his students." So why keep claiming there hasn't been "a single case, AFAIK, of a foreign English teacher being convicted of anything?" Just curious as to the discrepancy.

ah...my mistake...I read 'attempted rape' wrongly.....like a crime didn't actually happen. So, one exception proves the rule! Laughing

So according to our unscientific research so far, there has been exactly one case on record. This does not a scourge make.
