Seoul City said yesterday that the basic taxi fares will increase from the current 1,900 won to 2,400 won starting in June, marking the first rate hike since June 2005.
Distance rates will remain at 100 won per 144 meters while time fares are kept at 100 won per 35 seconds when the taxis are moving at 15 kilometers per hour or slower, city officials said.
Seoul taxicabs currently charge a basic fare of 1,900 won for the first two kilometers.
The city governments of Busan, Daegu, Gwangju, Ulsan and Daejeon recently increased their basic taxi fares to 2,200 won or 2,300 won. The five cities, however, also raised the distance rates.
Seoul City officials also said that all taxi drivers in the capital will be required to wear uniforms and smoking will be prohibited in all taxicabs from the latter half of this year. |

Is this going to affect the late night fares as well? |

I wonder this, too. The only time I ever use taxis is when the subway isn't running. Either way, they'll still be very cheap. It's only an increase of 500 won |

No more sleeping in I guess.
Seriously, my main respite is the fact that I don't *have* to take the neighborhood bus all the time just to get to the station. |

You absolutely stingy mother Fs!
Jesus, the stereotype of English teachers being tight bastards is now proven.
500 won after 4 years! Totally reasonable. What's the fuss? That's 25 pence and you are all crying. |

Well the taxi drivers already rip us off more than they need to (in all countries).

Same.
Anyway, last time I took a taxi, the guy never even started the meter. He just plucked a fare out of his ass. "5000". |

It's not the price. It's the fact that they bitch and moan about where you want to go, about doing their job, about your destination not being far enough, etc...Screw these guys. They deserve nothing. The subway needs to run all night so they have to start being human beings. |

I avoid taxis as much as possible. They can keep their extra 25p. |

When I first came to Korea the fares were 900 won, that was awesome, as I could get to work for 1000 which was damn cheap. Now a subway ride or bus is like 900 won. (Those were 400/500 won back in 97) |
