|
|
Someone mentioned that he works out at a gym and lifts weight at his public school, after his 9-5 day. Is there a gym or a weight room in most public schools in Seoul?
I realize this may not be the exactly place to post the question, but it's still kind of related to the job-related discussion forums.
Is it safe to say that it's about 30,000KRW/monthly for a gym membership in Seoul? |

My elementary school does not have a gym. I pay 50 a month for a gym a stone's throw from my house. It has everything I need. A bigger gym would be more.
Some schools might have their own gym, but I've never met anyone who works out at their school. |

It's very unlikely an elementary school will have a gym, however it's possible that a bigger high school will have one~~ |

My boys middle school has a huge gym - it's used for assemblies twice a year... and teachers' volleyball games after last class on Wednesdays.
In PE class, the students run around and whip each other with jump ropes on the artificial grass soccer field (unless the principal has rented it out)... I try not to be judgmental, but it's so 'K-stupid'. The soccer field (and surrounding two-lane running track) is currently undergoing a W4.000,000,000, two month-long, 'renovation' while teachers continue to (not) use the late '80s, 256K classroom computers hooked up to brand new, HD, LCD monitors the size of the soccer field.
If you want a weight room, pay for it privately... or even better, pick up a rock. |

not in seoul but pretty close. gyms range from 30-100,000 a month with discounts for 3 month and 6 month discounts.
Some schools have gyms but its a roll of the dice.
Just find a nice gym that has the facilities that you like. Some have swimming pools, some have squash courts, some have a good selection of free weights
I pay 70,000 , but mine is quite open, clean, large selection of weights, staff leave me alone and even when busy has free equipment, plus the changing rooms are nice.
My last gym was 50,000, a little cramped and the music was too loud, but it did have squash courts and a room i could practice hapkido forms. |

My boys HS has a gym. It's okay. Some of the fixed equipment looks like it was made sometime in the '80s, but there's some newer pieces; treadmill, bike etc and there's a pretty good selection of free-weights and lots of big end weights for leg work etc. You can have a pretty good work out down there. The best thing about it is nobody uses really. In the evenings I have it all to myself, that is, when I can actually be bothered to get off my ass and go.
The best gym in town is a 15-minute walk up the road. I usually buy 10 single visit tokens for 30,000. Not sure what the fees are per month. |

Don't get a job at an elementary school or girls school if you're hoping for a gym with any weight gear. |

my highschool has a very small gym with some little weights and dumbbells, even a treadmill.
no one uses it, far as I know.
it could "barely" do if I had absolutely no other alternatives, but you'll surely find some and odds are they'll be much better than your school's.
and yeah, I'd be shocked if schools below high school level had any gyms period. |

The gym memberships are on a sliding scale. If you buy a longer membership its less each month. I renew every 2 months and pay about 50,000 KRW a month.
I teach at a girls school so the basketball backboards have about 2 decades worth of dust on them (so, no PS gym for me).
THe big issue with gyms in Seoul is actually having access to a weight bench and the free weights. My gym only has one (!) weight bench which means I have to go at 'off' times to do my lifting.
good luck |

I've seen my girls playing basketball in their free time exactly once in almost four years. It looked like a cross between basketball and rugby. |

just wondering are there any parks with basketball courts? I would like to find a gym in korea that has a court ala 24 hour but I am not sure if things like that exist out there. |

I don't have many girls at my high school but I have a couple.. and this reminds me.
during lunchtime the boys will be out in the yard.. playing soccer or screwing around or playing basketball or screwing around on the outdoor "exercise" equipment the school just installed.
basically the boys are MOVING., doing SOMETHING.
the girls tend to sit around together out of the sun (the boys play in the sun) looking at themselves in their small personal mirrors and or playing with their cellphones.
it's actually amazing these girls don't get fat.. they must have mice like portions of food - and the only reason their flesh has any firmness to it is because of their age.
one of my co-teachers is around 26, has a great natural figure helped by her natural height,. but I'd bet a lot of money she's already quite flabby because I'm sure she does no exercise of any sort whatsoever and at 26 and beyond the firmness won't stay like it did when one's 16.
I can already tell when she puts on her jeans. I'd be almost tempted to say something (along the lines of friendly constructive advice) but I don't dare to for the fear it'd be misinterpreted as something different than friendly, innocent "advice". |
