Hi im trying to make up my mind about whether to apply for jobs teaching in Jeju-du island.
Does anybody live there? What's it like?
I heard the weather can be nice there and the air is better (im asthmatic).
But will it be easy to meet other westerners?
Is there a reasonable night life there?
What are the schools like? |

As Homer would say - "Do"
The schools are full of annoying students; and you'll anger the volcano god unless you bring a disposable virgin. Oranges are cheap (in season). |

For whatever reason, the salaries there tend to run lower than salaries on 'the mainland'. Personally, I can't see working there. |

Rats!
I thought this was gonna be a thread about deja-vu, maybe someone who had a mystical experience on the island.
---just another boring Sunday question.
Anyone ever have Jeja-Vu? |

There are 2 parts to the island. If you are concerned about meeting people live in gu jeju or shin jeju. These are the 2 areas of the main city. There is another side of the island that is a 45 minute drive to get to and it is called seogwipo but is much smaller and with less ummmm i guess foreigner hang outs. Jeju is a beautiful island..they have Burger king, mcdonalds, pizza hut, dominos, Indian resturant, outback steak house and a few other good resturants in the main Jeju city. It is fairly easy to meet people there. I find that there are people who would probably have no friends at home and yet they are all still taken into the giant group. Most people on the island figure those that live on the mainland are crazy and that they couldn't really do it themselves...to big city with ugly buildings and pollution and NO BEACHES!!! Jeju has a ton of different nice beaches. People go surfing and play beach volleyball. Frisbee is a big sport on the island.
Unless you are wanting to work as a slave horse and get tons of privates I suggest going to Jeju. Island life is great...however if you want more money and easier access to the rest of korea to do some sight seeing I suggest the mainland. |

that's pretty much the advice most people get in The States re: going to hawaii to work, isn't it? Spoken like Thomas Magnum, indeed!
I'd try to get to the EPIK schools, but it looks like their big push comes in late August.... my contract with GEPIK is up in June, so I think I'll aim at the southern tip of the Penninsula. |

Thanks for the response - good advice.
What would you say are the advantages and disadvantages if you were to compare it to living in Seoul?
And is the weather nice all year round on the island? |

I've only been living here three weeks, but I love it so far. I am located just outside of the city, but the buses run quite often, so it isn't a problem. There is a decent foreigner community, I spent easter weekend on the beach with about 15 or so of them, drinking beer, playing frisbee, taking a dip... There are hundreds of small hills and one giant mountain to hike, a trail (the olle) that goes all around the island (takes days to finish), kayak rentals, and pretty much every sport you can think of. I get the impression that life is more laid-back than on the mainland, although I have not yet been to the mainland. Gu-Jeju is a great place to go for lots of restaurants and small bars, but I have not gone out on a serious binge-drinking, partying it up weekend, so I don't know about nightclubs or anything like that. |
