I wear gym shoes, but they're brown, so they don't "stand out".
that said, in my PS the teachers wear sandals inside the school.

Foreign teachers don't wear slippers in the classroom? Shocked

Is the topic of 실내화 not brought up during orientation? Shocked

I assumed that foreign teachers new of this and followed the practice.

I dutifully wear my slippers inside the school. The floors are immaculate (the walls are covered in spit). When I go outside for a smoke, I wear my slippers... it's the K-way. Wink If I stay inside for a smoke, I spit in the ashtray because I'm a teacher and have some class.

yeah I meant slippers, not sandals..(no straps)

and I've always worn my slippers, until several weeks ago, when I caught a cold and felt better in my shoes.

but I'll be going back to the slippers soon... you can't run full speed down the corridor and then "surf" the waxed hall in gym shoes, can you??

Laughing

(though unfortunately unlike cruisemonkey's school, there's tons of spit on the floors of my school, the walls actually look OK)

btw.. what's weird about the slipper policy is that I find that many/most of my Korean teachers wear the slippers when they go outside of the school, whether to the store or even to eat out at the restaurant.

Well.. that kind of DESTROYS the original logic of the take off your shoes inside the school policy, doesn't it??

I guess I still have a long way to understanding Korean culture Shocked

I used to walk to school in my tennis shoes and put on my dress shoes when I got to school. Then I noticed half of the students just wearing their tennis shoes inside (no slippers) and even some teachers doing it. So I usually just wear my tennis shoes. Occasionally my dress shoes.

Our floors are filthy and covered in spit. I don't think anyone at my school cares what I or anyone else wears on our feet.

My school was filthy and everyone still cared very much the time I wore brand new sneakers instead of slippers in the school. I wanted to switch to real shoes but it was such an incident.

One teacher would sneak in to the school in her regular shoes. hehe!

I walk to school in tennis shoes, too, take them off, put them in my little cubby locker and put on my dress shoes usually. If I could find slippers big enough to fit comfortably I'd wear them (hey, how many jobs can you walk around in slippers all day?).

Although at my night class I usually just wear my sneakers since I'm one of the only teachers left in the building.

A few times when I was sick or distracted (re: hungover) I forgot to take my sneakers off and some of the other teachers said something (not admonishing me, but just 'you're wearing sneakers? really?. . . Shocked). It's like shaving and wearing some nice clothes, I'm always clean-shaven and I often wear the whole coat and tie (although you can get away with jeans and a nice shirt as long as you wear. . . the dress shoes! See it comes full circle.)

anyway, dress up a bit for your, your boss will think you're professional and not a grubby, hairy foreigner which you are allowed to be on the weekend.

I've worked in umpteen different public schools over the years & found the footwear policies consistent throughout all of them.

Middle & highschool -- slippers optional (for teachers, not students). I always leave my street shoes on. Not sneakers though, which I think would be frowned upon as inappropriate.

Elementary school -- slippers mandatory.

See, I thought that at first, and only wore my dress shoes. No one noticed when I switched to sneakers since half the students and staff wear them too. In fact, during one of my teacher's classes, they were shocked that I would occasionally wear my dress shoes with heels because I stand all day to teach and being in heels all day is "uncomfortable".

As far as impressing my boss; I haven't seen the principal in over a month and my desk is in my classroom, far away from everyone else. No one comes to visit me. So most of the day, I am alone, unless I am teaching a class or eating lunch. Plus I don't wear jeans and t-shirts to school; I actually dress professionally (dress pants, good shirts, nylons, etc) so I don't think my sneakers are a problem. And the other teachers are NEVER shy about correcting me about some point or another so I figured if wearing tennis shoes was an issue, I would have heard about it by now. Though now that summer is coming, I will be wearing skirts more often and thus, my dress shoes.

My husband, on the other hand, must absolutely wear slippers inside his school. But he gets away with t-shirts and jeans every day.

Slippers are manditory. The floors in the middle school I work for are beat to death. I was told the reason for wearing slippers was to keep the floor nice and clean. They are way past clean and neat. I hate wearing slippers. So I found a box of shoe covers that are used for visitors at said school. I now wear my dress shoes with covers. Nobody has said anything so far. For a society that places so much emphasis on "thy face", wearing a nice suit with slippers/slides etc. is an abomination!!

I just wear my sneakers or dress shoes. Depends on what I wear that day. The kids do wear their pink or blue slipper shoes but even those turn black from the dirt. My school`s floors are disgustingly dirty
