Just thought you'd all like to know that I found some pretty decent domestic brand razors for sale, for a great price.

I came over here 4 months ago with an 8-pack of Schick Xtreme 3's (disposible razors). Once I got through those, I was considering buying some Mach 3's at Costco. But then I looked at Homeplus and found this:

Dorco Pace 4 (disposible razor)

It has 4 blades (I was fine with 3, but whatever) and a 5 pack costs 3800won, which is really reasonable. Dorco has been around for a while, but this looks like a new razor (it says new on the packaging), and for the moment Homeplus is selling it as a 4+1 pack (a 4 pack with a 1 pack taped to it).

It performs very well. One razor lasts me two weeks (and I've got a heavy beard).

It's a good deal, and the price is great when you look at how much the Gillette and Schick razors are. And a word of warning, don't buy the Homeplus 3 blade razors. They're not very good, and the Dorcos are actually cheaper.

I have also noticed these razors (Dorco Pace 4) for sale in other smaller stores, so they should be easy to find.

Note that there is also a Pace 6 razor for sale, but it's way overpriced and 6 blades seems like a little much.

Jesus Man, How many times do you shave in a given week! If I use a Mach 3 blade more than 3 times, I loose at least 7 layers of facial skin. Not to mention the 20 plus lacerations that take a week to heal.

Maybe I need to hike up my skirt for a while!! I also store my current blade in ethanol, cutting down on the oxidation process of the razor's edge. Do you shave against the grain? I have been for years now. You can almost get away with shaving every other day. You will have a mini scruff by the end of the next day, but it is minimal!

blades lose about 5-10 % of their sharpness every time you shave, so you should really only use a blade at most 2 times.

also, you're supposed to shave once with the grain, then relather and shave against the grain.

Yeah, I think I use mine at least 10 times. When it feels dull, I grab another one!

I shave Sunday to Thursday, so 5 times a week. I admit that by the end of the second week the blades are noticeably less sharp, but it does the job. The tip about storing the razor in ethanol is interesting, it sounds like a good idea.

I use Gillette Fusion Hydra Gel (the orange can, for sensitive skin). There was a coupon for it at Costco so I bought a bunch of it.

When I shave, I splash hot water on my face, then lather, then wait about 5 minutes for the shaving cream to soften the hair on my face before beginning shaving. I also rinse the blades off frequently.

There is much debate on whether to shave with the grain or against it. My Dad taught me to shave with the grain, as this minimizes skin damage. It doesn't give me as close a shave, but it's close enough and I can't be bothered to relather.

asams, thanks for the info. I never knew that there was a technique for safely shaving against the grain. I'll have to remember it for those special occasions when I need a close shave. Here is an article I found that reiterates and backs up what you said:

I use "King of Shaves" shaving oil and it makes the blades last for ever. It's kind of scary to use at first as there is no lather but it gives a much better shave imo and it's good for sensitive skin, too. I doubt you can get it here, I usually get it sent from home. A tiny bottle lasts about 100 shaves.

I quit using throwaway blades a long time ago. Now I use this.

As for hot water splashing, I've found that a very hot washcloth held against the face for 30 seconds does more for me in terms of softening my facial hair.

Forward Observer, that looks really cool. I never would have thought those things were even being made still. How is it? Does it take much time to learn how to shave with it?

I'd use the cheaper throwaways if I could (I love to save a buck when I can), but I just can't. The blades are too close together, and even if I rinse frequently, they get clogged up and it's just a pain. It's probably because I have a full beard and there's so many bristles to shave off.

When I was in Homeplus, the Dorcos caught my eye because the blades have a lot of space between them.

It cost around 60 bucks, it took a few days to learn properly. It's not hard.

I tried for the "close shave" like you guys all of my life, until, that is, the winter camp of 2008. That's when my "shaving philosophy" was changed forever. Since we wouldn't be at a regular school for about 5 weeks, several of us decided to grow our beards during the break. I had never tried before, and didn't know how successful I'd be, since my beard is relatively light.

But it actually came in pretty good, and I found it incredibly liberating. I shaved it when regular school resumed, but here's how it changed me. Now I hate a close shave, preferring the shadow much more as it just fills out my face better. I still shave almost every school day, but never bear down. I usually pass the razor over the chin and mustache area lightly once or twice and I am done, except for a little splash of after shave skin conditioner. Also, if I have an early morning, I can save time by shaving the night before. Not bearing down is much easier on the face too.

Blades now last me at least a month. And yes, those Homeplus blades are a good deal.
