Hey guys, this is probably covered in one of the stickies but i failed to find it, so apologies. I would appreciate any help though.

I am planning on coming to Korea to find a job on location (I've taught there before on a pre-signed contract, a deal i dont really want again) but i am unsure as to how the visa specifics work. Essentially, can i get a teacher's visa with work contract beforehand? I assume not. So as i understand it the process usually goes-

1. Person flies out to Korea on a tourist visa (3 months?). Apparently you need a return ticket for this, however.

2. Person find job.

3. Job sends person to Japan/Thailand etc. to process E2 visa.

Please correct me if any of this is wrong.

Its my belief that flying to Korea first to find a job once there is a much more agreeable and efficient process, even at the cost of paying your own flights. Thus, i am trying to figure out the most efficient process of doing this.

Any help/advice would be appreciated, or alternatively please direct me to an old thread/sticky.

Much obliged.

You could just do what everyone else does, rather than try to skirt the rules..... given the fact everyone else has to interview at a consulate/embassy for their FIRST visa, be thankful that's one less hoop, and sniff out a gig through contacts, if you have any.

Make the ticket's return date open-ended

2. Person finds job.

After a lot of pavement pounding in a place like Seoul. This would be necessary to justify coming here.

3. Job sends person to Japan/Thailand etc. to process E2 visa.

Maybe. Maybe not. You should come with all the documents you need
to get hired. I've heard of people giving online interviews with the consulates.

Please correct me if any of this is wrong.

This is the best way to do it, in my opinion, if you can afford to.

This information is incorrect. Honestly, I correct this statement constantly. Don't post if you don't know what you are talking about. Seriously, this is just flat out wrong. The information is on immigrations website for crying out loud. Read it yourself! It is not "skirting" the rules.

You can have your FIRST E-2 visa issued in a third country. I know because I did it myself in August. You need to have your degree verified by the KCUE. This process needs to be done by your employer. It takes about two weeks. Once that is done, you no longer have to do the interview.

Your first visa? So, if i have already worked in Korea and have the old E-2 in my passport, it makes the process easier, is that what you're saying?

What I am saying is that it doesn't matter. However, you are right. If you have had an E-2 visa before, the official line is that you don't need to do the interview.

It is possible to get your first E2 visa not on home soil.

But, many immigration officials will tell you differently. I was told by an immigration supervisor that it was mandatory for me to return to my home country.

Wouldn't advise anyone try it from within Korea unless you must....can be headaches and time consuming.
