| I have been looking into vietnam as a place to go for 2 months during summer vacation. I will have a lot of study to do so I am looking to stay somewhere that is cheapish but not too much of a hole. I'll need internet access etc. I am also interested in trying kitesurfing. Mui Ne has come up in my seacrches as having a few kitesurfing schools. Has anyone been there? Is it an ok place to stay for up to 2 months? Not too sleazy or anything..? Any advice welcomed. I really want somewhere as a base because studying will be my main focus so I guess it doesn't matter if it rains a bit. I have been to Bali before ...but any other suggestions are welcomed. |

I stopped in Mu Ne beach Jan about 4 yrs ago. Lots of wind (almost 300 days a year if I remember) and lots of Kitesufers, tho' I wasn't one of them. I remember that it was a long beach with sand dunes nearby. The beach has basically one road running the length of it, with restaurants and resorts and bungalows on either side. No real town to speak of. The closest town is about 15 to 20 kilometers south and inland.
The place is or wasn't sleasy in the least and felt to me very laid back. It had all the facilities and a fair price range without being overly developed. I found places just by walking up and down the strip. ($10- $40 US) range. I also rented a motor bike which was great for sightseeing in the area and had one of the best pizzas ever at an authentic italian restaurant.
Not a place to go for nightlife but sounds like you aren't looking for that.
srry i can't supply specifics. |

Mui Ne is the best kitesurfing spot in Viet Nam....definately worth the trip.
If you want to stay for 2 months you'd better get a business visa...you can get the paperwork online from a travel bureau (just google viet nam visas) and pick up the visa at the airport.
Plenty of cheap places to stay but why 1 spot for 2 months? Head up to Nha Trang or to Phu Quoc island for some good water sports....
Sleazy? nope...laid back for the most part....if you rent a motorbike beware that the police are cracking down on those without a local license (to get one you need a 6 month visa, home license translated and take a road test.....the IDP is absolutely worthless in 'Nam) The police will confiscate the motobike for 1 month which would definately piss off the rental shop!!! If you rent one just be careful and be aware. If you meet a local lass and she is riding on the back of your bike the cops will zero in on you like flies to shite......she speaks Vietnamese therefore the cops can demand, at the least $$$, a license....and then take your bike.
Mui Ne is nice....enjoy! |

Get your innoculations updated.
WHO estimates over 60% of Cambodians have TB. I imagine your TEFL program never told you THAT shit. Vietnam's figure could be up there as well. |

Thanks for the info, I'll look into getting a business visa. I had read that about the police cracking down on another discussion board...which is a bummer. I'm female and not into women so I doubt I'll be going anywhere with a 'lass ' on the back!! I'm looking at staying there for 2 months so I can focus on my studies, I'm not sure if I'll have enough money for kitesurfing lessons but wanted to have the option of doing them. I might travel a little but probably not too much because I know i won't do my study if there are too many interesting things to see or do!!!
Any more tips appreciated! |
