Children's Day is Tuesday, and I believe that Buddha's birfday is the Saturday before it, so a lot of schools are giving their staff a long weekend. |

Arrrrr I remember them telling me that now!
I know some schools are doing 'activities' on childrens day instead of giving the kids a day off so - its a shame for some of you PS teachers who will have to work! |

Tuesday May 5th is Childrens Day and is a holiday off, but Monday May 4th is at your principals discretion. Most Koreans will NOT get Monday May 4th off. I asked my main co-teacher about this yesterday, but she didn't know yet. Holidays are rigged on weekends against the employees advantage in aspiration of further developing Korea through working more. Korea does not seem to mind not having enough holidays as they feel a patriotic pride in working often with few holidays. Korea does indeed have the fewest holidays of any country I know about.
I'm thinking.....(4 day weekend!) |

My principal is giving May 4th off, and May 6th is my school's birthday, so I've got a nice 5 day weekend. |

Where are you comparing with?
Korea definitely has more public holidays than the UK. In Britain we only have 1st Jan, Easter Monday, 1st Monday of May, last Monday of May, last Monday of August and Xmas Day & Boxing Day. Good Friday is treated as a holiday in some places, others not. So that makes 7, or possibly 8. And if you're a public school teacher, only the 1st Monday of May falls outside of what is school holiday time anyway.
It's true that Koreans lose out if the holiday falls on a weekend and 2009 is pretty unlucky in that regard. I also wouldn't argue that Koreans tend to spend more time at their place of work (whether productively working or not is another matter) than many other nationalities. But from some perspectives, the public holiday deal in Korea isn't such a bad one. |

They may spend more time at work, but the basic fact is that they aren't doing much at all. My principal stays here well after closing but after visiting his office recently, I noticed he has a nice flat screen TV, recliner, fridge and microwave in the corner of his office hidden behind a frosted glass barrier.
Seriously doubt he's working after 4:30. |

My weekend will rock! My school is having Sports Day May 1, and I have been told I do not have to come. Then, Monday and Tuesday off!! Even if I do have to come Fri, I'm still grateful for the four day weekend. |

I got the Monday and the Wednesday off. Nice 5 day weekend - gonna muscle it with the crowds and head to Jeju.
With this Gyeonggi election on April 8th and my schools birthday next week, I'll have only worked a full week twice in the last 5 weeks |

Have you actually talked to any koreans? I'm going to go ahead and guess no, because every korean I know is annoyed at how all the holidays are on weekends this year.
Canada only has 9 or 10 holidays depending on your province. The difference is we get another day off if it falls on a weekend. |
