I want a 42 inch tv. I don't have a blue ray and I have no desire to get one. I only download 720p movies and most of what I download are 700mb-1.4gb files. My xbox360 only has component.

So i'm thinking whats the point of paying the extra for 1080p.

I know this question pops up all the time but it tends to get answered by those with 1080p tvs that watch blu-ray. In shops i can't really tell the difference

Another factor is, how long are you going to stay in Korea? 1080 would be more future proof, but if your here for a short time, 720 is still good.

On a TV that size I wouldn't bother. You'd have to be sitting within 6ft of the TV to see any difference...unless of course, you like to sit that close.

Check this link:
http://www.carltonbale.com/2006/11/1080p-does-matter/

Also, most movies these days are not filmed/transferred in high enough quality to be noticeable in 1080p (save for animations), but this could change in the future.

1080p is a novelty right now. Outside of Blu-Ray, not many things can output 1080p. Most TV shows are encoded in 720p because that is the resolution of the source. Even then, only a handful of TV programming is broadcast in 720p HD.

For a 42" screen, get a 720p. Down the road (4-5 years) when most programming is being sent out in 1080p, then you should upgrade to a 1080p set. for now, 720p will do you right for like 90% things you watch.

1080p is just too expensive. Cable companies don't want to broadcast rogramming at 1080p because it'll sap up too much bandwidth. TV studios don't want to tape all the shows in 1080p because HD cameras are expensive. The average consumer doesn't want to buy 1080p because there is such a price difference between 720p and 1080p sets.

Personally, I won't buy a 1080p TV set, until 1080p is widespread enough that even commercials are broadcast in 1080p.

The MyLGtv service I'm using now feeds my 47'' 1080p TV a 1080i signal. Providing of course that the program or movie was filmed in HD.

So we aren't quite at the stage of being able to watch normal TV in 1080p on our 1080p sets. Unless we're watching blu-ray discs.

Like Hanguker says, if you're going to be sitting fairly far from the TV, like 6 feet or more, then you don't need 1080p.

You can save a packet if you're not shopping for 1080p. The prices on 720p are sweet compared to 1080p.

Just remember.....tvs now a days typically have both 1080i and 720p...only older models were limited to one or the other.

I dunno, I had a 37" Vizio a couple of months ago that played 720p (and 1080i) @60Mhz. i purchased a 52" Samsung before I left that did 1080p @120Mhz...and the picture was too clear, anything moving looked superficial. It hurt my eyes if I sat too close or watched it too long (for blueray discs). I actually preferred my cheapo Vizio's picture Sad

Well if you dont care about the latest technology and think watching movies on dvds is fine then you're right theres no point for you to get a 1080p tv. If your planning to buy blurays sometime in the near future i would suggest you get a 1080p tv....

These days i only watch blurays cuz personally i prefer the crispness and clarity as well as the colours and values are noticibly different ( to my eyes anyways. I work in the movie business soo i deal with this stuff everyday and having the extra quality is important to me as well as keeping up with the technology) That being said, nothing wrong with Dvd 720p 108i ( uprezing) quality movies are just as enjoyable =p. HD 1080p is where everything is going though. Itll take a number of years before they stop making dvds though an 720p content.

I have a 1080p monitor, but my computer severly skips frames and slows down when I attempt to play the few 1080p movies available. If your computer can do 1080p video smoothly, then you can watch some movies in true HD. Xbox 360 can be brought up to 1080p, but games play in 720p native resolution. I notice a blip line in the center at times where it's refreshing the top half of the screen and then the bottom half a bit too slow for my eyes not to notice so it might be cheap Chinese made. When you get it out of the box, it's too bright so you set the menu to English and reduce the brightness to make it watchable for hours on end. I gave like 340,000 for a 24 inch wide screen HD 16:10 ratio monitor. It's pleasant to sit in front of each evening.

I download 720p x264 movies and tv shows as much as possible vs. regular TV. Regular TV doesn't look good on an HD monitor, but it's watchable if it's the only format available for what you want to watch.

Really, I'd just get a 1080p monitor if I were you as it's really not much more money and will serve your need for several years or until you sell it to leave Korea. You can also mail it home if you decide to go home before parting ways with it. They tend to be like 200,000 won more at home in my research. Same for Emart over Gmarket. I wouldn't advise putting it in your luggage, but save the original box and pay 40,000 won to post it.

Its a good suggestion but i think your a little off interms of what the OP wants size wise anyways. Also if he just wants a TV, buying a 24 inch LCD tv would be cheaper than getting the 24inch computer monitor/hdmi 1920x1080 resolution.

Anyways watching movies on a bigger screen is much more entertaining! GO BIG!!!

Yep, 42 inch is a big TV. Maybe OP wants to watch TV traditionally in a living room with satellite, but he's talking about using it for downloaded movies so that indicates OP is going to use it as a computer monitor. Since monitors aren't normally this huge, a TV is the way to go. At that size, it might be much cheaper to go 720P if you're not going to watch blue-ray movies since nothing else, but a handful of torrents on a powerful computer with HDMI video output does 1080P.

I had a 42" HDTV plasma and i could definitely tell the difference between 720p and 1080p even with regular DVD's. I also "acquired" movies compliments of a 25Mbps connection and hooked up my Macbook Pro via HDMI to the TV and even then i could tell. But i also had a PS3 and Xbox 360 so if you're not going to watching HD anything or BluRay than i would save yourself the money.

You could always check out Costco too:
