i just went for my second chiropractic treatment at this place...

the doctor, dr. andrew park, is a really nice guy, very helpful and he cracks you up nicely. his english is excellent.

the phone number is 02-533-5124

to get there, you get out of exit 6 at gangnam station. walk straight and turn left at the body shop. walk about 1 block. there's a burger king on the left side, a buy-the-way and a big ugly tan brick building on the right. go into the tan building. suite 510.

his rate is 50,000 per visit but he offers a 10,000W discount for english teachers. as well, if he finds that you need multiple visits, he gives you a discount if you pay for a bunch in advance.

chiropractics seem hard to come by in korea. go get cracked.

I guess there are actually some medical hoaxes Koreans won't fall for. Who knew?

My two cents:

Chiropractors make a lot of sense to me. I used to think they were, at best.....'real doctor' wannabees. That was until I had back pain and needed something and tried a chiropractor. I was a real skeptic until I proved it to myself.

I'm really amazed that so many people have been so ignorant about the good that chiropractors can do with some of the comments I've seen on this board. Especially when it seems like every month there's some big medical expose in the US about malpractice amongst doctors and doctor-drug company connivence. I can only assume they've never tried a chiropractor. When I finally tried one, the benefit (not to mention the comparatively smaller cost) was amazing.

I lived in Houston and had some (probably) previous injuries or aggravations that would manifest in back pain sometimes. It was probably caused by the physical nature of my job at the time (mobile windshield repair.....climbing all over cars and pickup trucks). Sometimes I'd really be in pain.

But I'd go so Dr.Hassbrock, she'd do her 'snap-crackle-pop' routine and....BAM! I was good for another few months.

It's just amazing to me what people will believe yet they resist putting any credence in something like chiropractic which, seems to me, has a lot of very plausible credence to it.

I'm looking for a chiropractor in Seoul right now. I'd heard there was a reasonably priced on in Itaewon. I called the one advertising in Seoul Travel and Culture Magazine this morning and they're a little expensive seems to me.

This Dr.Park sounds more reasonable but I'm still looking for the other chiropractor in Itaewon. I have a friend in Seoul Salsa meetup club who said she goes to a chiropractor in Itaewon who only charges 36,000 KW. I'm looking for that guy.

Regards,
Art

I take little issue with the majority of methods used by chiros. I've had conversations with a vascular surgeon who is VERY anti-chiro due to his experienced fixing vascular tears in the carotid artery secondary to cervical manipulation. In all fairness, this surgeon is one of the best but he's pretty myopic in his views of treatments. West is best for him.

My personal beef with Chiros in the US is their lobbying for prescriptive power and medical nutrition therapy reimbursement. What the second point means is that they want insurance to pay them for giving nutrition advice and for the sale of supplements. As a registered dietitian (RD) my education was based entirely on understanding evidence based nutrition. Chiros do get some nutrition education but there is a large component of it that is waaay "out there". I'm fine with "out there" but base it on evidence and don't ask for insurance to pay for it until then. In the end, it has become apparent that, although nutrition can be part of the holistic approach, it is also lucrative for chiropractors. To date, in most states, they cannot prove their nutrition approach to be valid enough to warrant reimbursement from insurance companies the way registered dietitian professionals do. But is does not stop them from trying.

Spinal manipulation, fine. Medical nutrition therapy, hands off.

Isnt it more likely WHEN he finds you need multiple visits?

the field seems more based on a "Cult of personality" approach to things, similar to some in the psychotherapy biz. From what I remember reading in college, a lot of research is spurrious at best, and unverifiable in the scientific definition of research.

but a good backcrack... not too shabby!

I have slight scoliosis (curvature of the spine) and was in real pain a few years back. I couldn't tie my shoes without pain. Went to a chiro who put me on a table with rollers that would rise and massage, inverted me, put electric diodes on my lower spine, and prepped me for a half an hour or more. When he finally popped me every bone from my skull to my tailbone popped. And then again when he twisted me back. Best $40 I ever spent. No pain since.

He was educated at the RMIT (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) school of Chiropractic, which is one of the best. I used to see him years ago when I lived in Seoul. Back then there was no discount, except for students.
His non discounted rate was 40,000. Now its 50,000 less 10,000.
Same same. You might be better of saying you are a student instead of an English Teacher.
Get a Korean friend to ring up and find out what the real rate is.

There is a Korean dude in Daegu, his business is called Gold's massage. His rate was 30,000, and you got a long very comprehensive treatment. Then a local TV station did a program about him. Now his rate is 50,000 and his treatment sucks.

In Itaewon, you can go to Dr. Phillip Yoo. He's in the green Hannam Building on the first floor.

Here is his website:

He also has an office in Osan.

Maybe you can get a private consultation at your apartment from D.D.

I am a professional body worker taking time off to travel and teach. I have trained with some of the best. I am not impressed by what I see here so far. Most acupucturists have forgotten the real reasons for doing the therapy. Rolfing is so out dated and creates a false overly emotional state. The current practices that are good are N.S.A. a non cracking style of chiropractic and 12 stages of healing is a book you can buy about breathing youre way back to health.

I would set up here if I could get past the visa mess- but it looks too difficult. I really like the work of people like Echarte Tolle and teachers that teach present time awareness. Also the is a cd you can buy or down load called kundalini by osho that has a 1 hour meditation that I find very helpful.

In short be careful be careful of any practitioners that terat symptoms rather than the cause. Keep in mind that most really talented practitioners do not visit and teach in Korea. The reason is that their styles of work get copied and watered down buy practioners that want to make money more than give good quality work. Fly to Hong Kong and see Christine Rydel chiropractor for good quality energy work that is well researched and the practitioners are well trained. Acupunture can be good if you find the right person-so far I have only found people that are not well trained and work at a superficial symptom level.

iammac2002,

Do you know a way of getting a hold of D.D.? I wanted to ask him in another thread whether he knew of any chiropractors in Vietnam or China. I haven't posted enough comments on Dave's ESL Cafe to send personal messages (pm).

Maybe I'll just do a lot of posting this week so I can pm him.

Did the doctor that treated you do it in Korea? I too have a slight scoliosis.

I'm looking for a chiropractor. If the one that worked on you is in Korea, I'd love to know where I can find him.

ooh, thanks for the info. i went to three separate chiropractors, one in itaewon, yongsan and another place i forget where. but, two of the doctors were too small/weak to do a proper adjustment and the third guy said he wouldn't adjust me because it's dangerous for my back. it was a really lame/bad experience from all 3. the first two doctors tried, and nothing happened. no cracks, no pops. it was kind pathetic because one of them was panting afterwards.

i'm not even a fat guy, i'm 5'9" and weigh 78kg.

anyway, i swear by chiropractors too, i had lower back pain from wrestling that lasted for months, went to a chiropractor and the pain went away in a day. amazing.
