Yet again I actually expected intelligent responses from a Daves post.

I did not say the term was NOT offensive to some, EQUATING it with the "N word" is NOT The same bloody thing.

On that clip from Jerry Springer that someone linked, do you think the show would have gotten away with it if it was 2 black men fighting and the audience was saying "Ni##er fight, Ni##er Fight"

if you say yes, pick up the phone, dial GOD and tell him he can have your brain back, you are clearly not using it.

Someone else mentioned "society" views it as pejorative, never said they didnt, but it is NOT the same as the N word in society.

Does a "little person" like being called a midget? I imagine many dont, and many are indifferent. The first nations guy I knew was indifferent about being called an indian.

The word "retarded" used to be acceptable since retarded simply meant HINDERED. Its likely not going to be long before we change mentally handicapped to "less advanced" because handicapped is going to sound offensive too.

Ermm... Handicapped as far as I am aware, isn't acceptable. It literally means 'hand in cap' 'cap in hand' and come from the days when disabled people were forced to beg to survive and held out their cap to collect the money. At least that's what I think.

mentally challenged then, whatever the PC term of the day is.

I find it hard to keep up, they change the acceptable terms so often.

I think you'll find the acceptable term is Spastic.

I was watching this episode of SP last night. It seems very apt of this discussion! Smile

fool Shocked

I guess the real question is, does a "little person" ever use the term positively toward another "little person" as people of African decent have used "the n word" time and time and time and time again toward another person of African decent.

My guess would be no.

Gays call each other "faggot" with a consistency that probably unnerves even the most entrenched homophobes. [Ghetto-ass] black people spew the "N" word like tourettes sufferers. Rich and middle class Mexicans call migrant workers "beaners..." Rich and middle class Americans call poor Americans "white trash" and so on...

I'd be willing to bet that within the "little people" community they toss around the word "midget" like, well, tossing around midgets.

If one doesn't belong to a said group should one use their lingo? The safe answer would be "no," but only pussies play it safe. When in Rome, bitches. When in Rome.

Do you think GOD has an LG, KTF, or SK handphone?

On a serious note, these "politically correct" terms are becoming such a pain in the ass.
Let's make a list and carry this further for fun:

- Holiday Tree (can't call it the "Christmas Tree". But i will anyways)
- Flight attendant (no longer the sexy stewardesses that took to the skies)
- administrative assistant (can't call them secretaries anymore)
- servers (can't call them waitresses anymore - but why is bartender the same???)
.........

^

secretary/stewardess were too gender specific as i understand it.

i haven't noticed "server" being used any more than waiter/waitress..i think they're used interchangeably.

on that note, though, i wonder when "nurse" is going to get a new title. does "physician's assistant" count, or is that different?

How about some other great examples of stupid PC

Garbageman - Sanitational Engineer
Teacher - Educator
janitor - Custodial Enginneer
Nanny - Au Pere
Nanny - Domestic Assistant

Merry Christmas - Happy Holidays or Seasons Greetings

Immigrants - Non indiginous people

and my all time favorite STUPID change for PC reasons

And the winner is - And the oscar goes to

Because heaven forbit we insinuate that the people who DONT win the oscars are losers. Hey Tarantino, did you walk out with the Oscar?????

NO

oh so you lost huh?

I think you have to add "The N Word" to that list of irritating PC terms. For some reason that phrase annoys the shit out of me.

The thing is, there is no central place to go to in order to enforce these terms. Cops don't go around pulling over people for using the N word.

If you are Christian and you want to say Merry Christmas, what's the big deal? If you are Jewish and you want to say Happy Hanukkah, what's the big deal?

To use "politically correct" to mean the proper usage of a word is a misnomer. Who is to say what is the "politically" correct way?

It's more like pious righteousness to me, who needs it?

He wasnt' that far off, it still refers to disabled persons needing to beg to survive... (alan's def) vs the snopes':

...King Henry knew that the war had left his country with a great number of disabled veterans... King Henry could not envision disabled veterans being able to hold a job, or contribute to society... So King Henry VII ... proclaimed that begging in the streets be legal for people with disabilities. So into the streets, with their "cap in hand", went King Henry's disabled veterans, to beg for money.
