A lot of the buying has been related to rumors of the ammo tax going from 11% to 55%. I've even overheard some people say they're buying it now as an investment to sell for a hefty profit at a later date, since they can't make any money on stocks.
I bought some more buckshot the other day after my parents' home was burglarized. |
At least you can defend your property.

| The Texas Sovereignty thread could have easily gone here as well, especially the second link about secession. |

The report even stated that returning vets may possibly pose a threat with their 'skills' and such....
might that have more to do with the vets feeling as if they have been lied to and f*d over for the past 8 years????
DHS has gone overboard...who's the real threat? |

I get the irony. Less than 100 days in power and already a Democratic administration is declaring our greatest threat to be . . . the loyal opposition! I note the lack of evidence that right-wingers are a threat. This DHS report is so BS that I find myself agreeing with Michelle Malkin. And that is almost too much to stand. |
I have found someone that I agree with......interesting. Maybe Daves is not a liberal magnet. Is it? |

Speaking of people like Michelle Malkin, maybe th DHS is concerned because people with a national platform are talking about 'rising up' and 'revolutions' or 'new world order' and 'resisting tyrany'.
http://www.truthout.org/040909N
http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/268121
or maybe because the recent republican VP had ties to a sessesionist movement.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwvPNXYrIyI
Or maybe because gun nuts are stockpiling arms at an ever-accelerating rate.
http://edition.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/11/11/obama.gun.sales/index.html
No, there's absolutely no cause for alarm. Because everyone remembers the rumbles in the street about buying guns and having a little revolution when Bush was president, right?
THe DHS, what a backwards organization, right? I wonder, what jackasses created the DHS?
I know you were hoping for a real 'gotcha' post, but I remember another 'vaguely worded document' talking about someone going to strike inside the U.S. that our government might have taken a bit more seriously.
Keep trying though! (And I love the new CAPS, how mature of you!) |

DHS is right - but only half right. There is a lot of dissatisfaction on the left as well, as can be seen from this thread.
Revolution is coming from all sides. Keep your homes stocked and your guns warm. |

Is there any sign of marching in the streets and arming themselves? Any heated rhetoric? Anything stronger than people saying, "Drat!"? |

Man, you said it, bruddah. This is political chicanery of the worst sort passing itself off as an appeal for national unity. Can you imagine what the uproar would have been if the Bush Administration had done something similar, except by singling out the radical Left?
And the worst insult of all was the insinuation in that many returning war veterans would be susceptible to right wing extremism. Yet again we see the ignorance of liberals when it comes to the military.
Oh, and incidentally, some of the dumbest fucks I've ever had to deal with on the phone are the DHS personnel attached to American embassies in East Asia. |

That is true. And the Kennedy bros were killed by left wing nutjobs. |
Sure. And there was the Weather Underground etc. But given recent history in Oklahoma City and Binghamton, it seems worth keeping an eye on these folks. It simply happens to be that the fringe right is now more dangerous than the fringe left. |

Do you mean one like this one, published on Jan. 26, '09? Leftwing Extremists Likely to Increase Use of Cyber Attacks over the Coming Decade
http://www.foxnews.com/projects/pdf/Leftwing_Extremist_Threat.pdf
Note the publishing date--less than a week after Obama came into office. The report had to have been written under Bush.
Or like the one from 2001 which I can't google up right now or I'll miss class?
But I do have time to sympathize with you. I just hate it when the gov't is even-handed and blocks right-wingers' attempts to play the victim. It just sucks. Kind of like teabagging on the Washington Mall in a way.
Personally, I like it that my taxes go to fund efforts to keep an eye on extremists. Makes me feel the gov't is doing the job we pay them to do. |

I'll be the first to admit that I don't keep up on my right-wing wackos as much as maybe I should--I tend to get the Michelles mixed up. Assuming Michelle Malkin is the right Michelle, wasn't she a supporter of the Patriot Act and warrantless wiretapping? It isn't like the DHS report was focused on country club Republicans sitting around with their gin and tonics discussing their golf game. It was focused on extremists who might decide to blow up another gov't building.
Why would she be so concerned about protecting the wingnuts if she wasn't concerned about protecting the rest of us?
Puzzling. |

Yeah she's an authoritarian conservative. She supported those things. She also seems to believe the DHS report is targetting her, which is nonsense. But she's right that the generalizations are broad.
Again, I agree with Ambinder, the Obama administration is probably embarrassed by the report and trying to ignore it until it goes away. |

SMACK-DOWN
This is the best-reasoned/argued response to the OP I've seen so far:
The ultimate reaping of what one sows: right-wing edition
When you cheer on a Surveillance State, you have no grounds to complain when it turns its eyes on you. If you create a massive and wildly empowered domestic surveillance apparatus, it's going to monitor and investigate domestic political activity. That's its nature.
http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2009/04/14/surveillance/
"When they have a club in their hands, no one is more sadistic. When the club is removed, no one is more whiney." That is about the most apt illustration of the authoritarian personality (see Eric Fromm) you'll ever want to see. |

The guy would've gotten arrested down here too.
There's a guy in my hometown who was arrested a couple of months ago because he came home to find a thief loading his truck up with some loot from his house and promptly beat the shit out of the thief in the driveway. However, if the thief had been inside his house at the time of the fight, he could've legally killed the thief. |
