| Basically the mother heard her son was being disruptive in class and came and spoke to me. She said she wants her son to do well and that I should hit him if he is being stupid. Pretty funny. Not that I already didn't give students a bop on the nogin if they were being bad. But he gets extra now haha. |

These are my favorite parents. I heard teachers in China get this sort of treatement. The parents worship the ground the teachers walk on... well that's the rumor anyways. Sort of like iif a teacher wanted to take a cattle prod to their kid, it would be ok to teach him discipline. <3
The ones that are irritating are the ones that irrationaly defend their kids
"Oh my angel wouldn't do anything wrong".
Those parents deserve a beating along with their kids. |

| There was a myth that Korean parents cherished teachers. Maybe long ago but not today. It's all about Minsu and Su min now. We're just fumes. |

| You need a good set of punishments when you teach 20 elementry students alone. I would give a speech how you should listen in class but all the students wouldn't understand. A quick bop on the head for boys is a fast way to get them to be quiet. Its not like beating them as they do in middle and high. Cheek pinching is also good. |

| I've found just the threat of calling a student's mother can change their mood pretty fast - especially if you do it standing in front of the class and everyone hears, including the student who is misbehaving. |

I had a elementary school student in an after school program really act like a little shit. This was in a buddhist run community center. He'd say 'no book' making me get it out of his bag (bopped him on the head with it), then he'd ignore me, put his feet up on the desk, jump in with regular and obnoxious noises every 5minutes or so, and so on. I was trying to keep a fun class, and there was a lot of people there who didn't want to be there so I wasn't too hardcore on discipline. The mothers were only paying like 50k a month for it.
But that kid crossed the line. I told him I'd be calling his mum, and he either didn't understand or didn't care. So I got my wife to ring his parents that evening....
Next week he was a little angel. First thing he said to me was, "Teacher I'm sorry." I got told by the Korean co teacher (she would take the class on Tues and Thurs and occasionally pop in on Fridays-unpaid) that he'd had the back of his legs whipped good.
I used to be against corporal punishment. But now I'm not so completely sure. |

Bring back controlled beatings.
Would stop 99% of the bullsh*t in our classes. These kids behave so badly that by not stopping the ignorant behaviour, we are actually teaching it.
Case in point: the last class I taught. 6 girls and 6 boys. The 6 girls did all their work and had fun doing it. The 6 boys goofed off and ignored my repeated attempts to get them to listen, work, speak English. I gave up and began teaching exclusively to the girls. This happens virtually every class with these kids. Consequently, the girls can express themselves in English whereas the boys can't.
If, four months ago, just one of these boys had been hauled out of my class for a good a$$ whooping, I guarantee you that I wouldn't have the same problems I'm having now.
I have another class filled entirely with rejects. The Korean teacher has largely given up. He can't control them. I certainly can't. The kids now are coming to class late: between 5 and 30 minutes late. 25% are now doing homework. These kids have learned that there are no consequences for them. They run the show. And they aren't shy about it either. "Why are you late?" I ask. "Eating ramien." Nice. |

I have a question for those of you who advocate beating children:
Do you beat administrators and co-workers when you're angry with them?
If not, what's the difference? |

If it were possible to make an instant and dramatic change in the attitude of 30 low-level administrators by making the worst behaved of them kneel outside a classroom for a while followed by a little talk and a slap with a ruler I'd say go for it. Unfortunately things in the adult world aren't quite so simple. |

No, but I would beat you.
But seriously. Most boys do not understand self-discipline. I did not. Most adults do. Those adults who do not get fired eventually. Imagine if teachers behaved in the school like they do on a Saturday night. Many boys act as if class time is no different from playtime. |

I wish we could live in a world without those few bastard students. It's just frustrating when 90% of the students are good and some are bad. But you need to waste so much time telling to be quiet. Which stops you from teaching and then the other kids minds wander off. Thinking about it, I don't think hitting the students works in the long term. Because to have any kind of affect you need to hit them so hard they will remember it, which I think we have moved past as society. Anyone got any other alternative ideas. I know calling the parents is good and has worked in the past. But the korean teacher is overworked as it is. So I don't want to give her that stress.
Last week I adopted a method of drawing three hearts on the board. These represented the students live, like in a game. If you lost all three. There would be no game, no candy and more homework. It worked pretty well when I picked up the erazer and all the students would tell the noisy kid to shut up. But in the end it was often one student to remove all the classes lives so I felt bad about giving them all extra work because really most didn't deserve it.
Wish I had the power to just kick them out of the class forever. I would love my job if I could remove the few bad students which give me 95% of my stress at work |

Yeah, call discipline "beating". There's no difference there.
You wouldn't slap a little kid's hand if he's reaching for the stove and about to burn himself? A little discipline TEACHES children. Words are meaningless from the powerless edutainer. |
