You have been on lately!
A lot of the bashers in the thread just completely resent that they had to go to university and hate the idea that someone else might get away with not doing it. Grinding through university sucks, paying for it sucks, but I definitely do not envy anyone coming here without a degree. |
It couldn't be that they think that just because someone speaks English and has a white skin, that doesn't give them the right to break Immigration law and commit fraud?
Nah. That couldn't be the reason could it? After all you are a mind reader...must be since you can so confidently state that what you said WAS the reason. |
No one has the "right" to break laws obviously. (We don't know what color this guy's skin is either... ) I suppose I can't relate to being personally offended by someone breaking the law. He's not hurting anyone except for possibly himself.
And I didn't say it was the ONLY reason. |

No you didn't..but you didn't mention any other reasons. And you did say "a lot of bashers in this thread just COMPLETELY resent.. " thus implying that the complete reason for the bashing was that the guy was taking a short cut (capitals are mine)
And yes illegal teachers hurt us all. Wages may not go down if they come over here in droves to work, but they sure as Hades aren't going to go up. Inflation, the exchange rate and rising prices do the rest.
And every time a bunch of them get deported, we ALL (or mostly all) get portrayed in the press as a bunch of forgers and frauds.
Would you welcome even MORE stringent and time-consuming checks on our qualifications? Because if enough illegals come here and it gets to be an issue...it WILL happen. |

I could see you pulling off part time private employment such as tutoring, or maybe even a salary part time job if you got a TESOL or something. But you will need luck and enough cash to survive in Korea until you got the job. But working legally without a university degree, don't hold your breath. |

hey is it possible to teach in korea if you have a F-4 visa but no degree? i've been researching and i think a degree is mainly required by the imm to get the E-2 visa and that with a F-4 visa you can work like a regular korean. is it possible to work in a public school or hawgon with no degree? and if i got a tesol cert will it help my chances of getting a job? thanks! |

Public School, absolutely no chance at all. Hagwon is a possibility. I know a few gyopos without degrees teaching at hagwons....not even native English speakers (Danish and German) |

I hear you can work legally in more remote villages in China sans degree. You might also have good luck in South America. Don't look to work illegally; it's not worth it.
Like the other posters said, TaLK will take just a year (like 25 credits), Knock out some summer classes and test for credits and you'll be set in no time. If you're competent enough to teach English, it should be easy to pass some Klep tests. |

Not bothering to read any of the responses in this thread, or even the OP's first post. OP, your priorities are f*cked, stay in your folks' basement. |

I knew of a boss who actively sought out, recruited, and hired non-degreed employees. He would employ them for as long as he possibly could without paying them anything...this would usually last for a few months at least. Eventually they would catch on, and he would turf them. But he would never actually give them anything. Because there was nothing they could do. The labor board won't help an illegal alien.
If you still think it's a good idea to come here illegally after hearing that, I don't know what else to tell you. |

Let's put this myth to bed. No, not just anyone can do this job. Were that so we wouldn't have all these posts about how to deal with students/discipline/how to teach/classroom management...
Not only that, but there are a fair number of people who do midnight runs/ or remain here being miserable simply because they aren't cut out to deal with a new culture.
Sure maybe anyone can stand up in front of a classroom and go "repeat after me"...but that's not being a teacher, that's being a clown/tape recorder.
Yes, anyone can be a clown...not just anyone can be a teacher.
The myth that anyone can do this job, is long played out and should have been retired years ago. It's bad enough that most schools (hakwons/public) seem to have swallowed it hook, line and sinker, but to hear it from our colleagues is beyond the pale. Heck do a search, and you'll find plenty of posts on these forums alone from people who have apparently no clue of how to teach. |

It would be much better to have a friend already living here. I know a girl who is working here legally and her bf is coming over, without a degree and is gonna pick up private teaching jobs, and maybe an academy job eventually.
If you wanted to not get in trouble with immigration, just leave every 30 or 60 days, how ever long the visa is and go to japan or china for a quick vacation.
Don't worry about some of the comments. There is a lot of people on here who need to get off their high-horses and realize that foreigners are going to get a bad name here regardless of what they do. |

also, I'm sure a good percentage of the people on here work illegal privates, which is no different than what OP wants to do. Maybe there should be less stones thrown! |

Penalty for doing privates with a degree=fine...possible deportation.
Penalty for doing privates without a degree=Fine+deportation+ possible jail sentence. |

i dont get it, the op doesnt want to take 2 years to get an associates degree? dude, take two years, go to a community college. take korean classes while youre there.

As of September, 2008 some provinces in Korea have arranged for an exception to the education requirements for the E-2 visa... those with two years full-time post-secondary study at an accredited university, community college, or vocational school in an English-speaking country are eligible for teaching employment visas. |

You can get work here no problem.
There are people with associate degrees teaching in universities here. I should know. I've seen it.
In hogwons, alot of owners hire Korean college students without a degree to teach. If a hogwon owner is desperate enough he/she WILL hire a foreigner without a degree. It happens all the time here. Most of the people on the board just know dont about it and think their B.A. in Liberal Arts is the Holy Grail. |
