Christ, quit debating the merits of smoking pot. I'm sure there are other forums to discuss this than on a messageboard for teachers in a country where marijuana is demonized.
It's illegal here, don't do it, don't be an ass. |

^^^That's ridiculous (not the part about not doing drugs in Korea... the other part). Heaps of people use pot without having the desire to do anything else. You're obviously speaking from a position of total ignorance.
It's kind of hard to put myself in the position of defending any kind of drug-- but marijuana is heaps less addictive and less harmful than tobacco+the additives in tobacco. |

| Smoking weed in Korea is a hell of a gamble, but that's only because drug laws are written by [mod edit]. |

It's their country and their damn laws......abide by them! Simple as that.
I get really pissed when foreigners come to my country and wantonly break the laws, like the Koreans who just can't help themselves and eat dog here in the states, even though they know how offensive it is to us culturally but don't give a damn and do it anyways.
Did you notice the first thing they mentioned were that a few of them were Engrish teachers? These turkeys are just giving the media and foreigner hating public more ammo. |

I think there is a good thing to come out of this post and a bad thing~
The good thing is the debate about it. There was a time when I would be up in arms over its use in American society. However, my mood has changed (for obvious reasons ) and I believe that it should be legalized in the US. In the state of CT, they just announced that anyone carrying under an ounce was only subjected to a fine based on how much they were caught carrying.
I believe that if marajuana was legalized, the US deficit would be gone and the government would have all the money it needed to subsidize healthcare and provide for other basic programs that are now being cut because of the recession.
The bad side is, yes, pot is illegal in Korea. These news stories don't do anything to help create a poisitive image of foreigners in Korea. The more people get caught doing something that is not socially acceptable in Korea, the more these kinds of stories will appear and the worse it will get for foreigners in the country. The thing is that people go to raves and when they see Koreans doing something they automatically think it is ok for foreigners to do it as well- but what they fail to realize is that Koreans aren't subjected to discriminately adminstered drug tests like foreigners are. A police officer can pick a foreigner off the street, take them to a police precinct and administer a drug test. If it turns up hot, then they could be arrested, fined and then deported. Not to mention that a story would run in the local news about a foreigner getting caught doing drugs- which will not help improve our image, thus creating more problems for the foreign community in Korea.
China takes Drug use leniently???!
Is that a serious statement?
China is the last place a person wants to be caught with drugs on them. At least in Korea, a person is sentenced to prison, in China, a person could be executed for drug use and possession. |

Don't sweat it, they already had those ideas to begin with.
As far back as the war, for sure, and perhaps further back than that. |

Morons. These @$$holes are nothing but morons. It's one thing to say that someone disagrees with a country's attitude towards drugs and drug usage, but it's something completely different to go to a country and partake in something that is known to be so frowned upon.
I sincerely hope that the Canadian teachers who were busted for this are given the maximum sentence allowable. It's crap like this that allows the anti-foreigner sentiment to fester. Sure, it would exist otherwise, but this gives those who hate foreigners more ammo to use against us being here. |

People who hate-foreigners hated them in the first place.
The racist person will hate you by the sight of you no matter who you are or what you do.
As for more ammo, do you really think that laws have degenerated against you? In my fifteen year relationship with it Korea has opened up immensely towards foreign people. I couldn't get a credit card then. I couldn't work in a public school, I couldn't sponsor my own visa as a working father with Korean children .... All sorts of changes for the better, despite there being some victim-less crimes now and then in the general community.
-There was a Korean music artist busted for weed. On his fourth bust, he was jailed for six months.
-There was a news article once as some farmer down south was growing weed on the side of the road. Cops were laughing on the screen for some reason. It was about that people had stopped their cars to strip the plants for use.

And before anybody else makes any comments about weed...that's not what they were busted for...according to the article.
They were arrested for selling ecstasy (MDMA).
And to add my 2 cents.
Now if you want to use drugs that's your business.
But if you are a drug pusher, then you deserve everything you get. Weed doesn't kill you, but there have been deaths due to ecstasy. |

| What's the literature on weed becoming a stepping stone to more powerful drugs? |
As a certfified drug counselor i can say TCH is a non gateway drug. It is far less addicting than alcohol or smoking. It does have its uses. It can make people eat and ease pain from sick people. I don't care if peopel smoke it in there own home, but while using one can have slower reflexes. Hence, if they drive a car or something like that.
Until last year there were under 10,000 drug cases in S Korea, so they were noted as a drug free country. That changed in 2008 by 10,542.
Now the other drugs they were selling, those Illegal. They can be used as a date rape drug and have other serious health issues. I do say though regardless if you think it is ok or not, everyone should obey the rules of the country they are in. If you want to smoke and get high go teach in S America or other countries where it is legal. |

| Using or dealing illegal drugs in Korea is beyond stupid. At the same time, it does seem to say something about the harmful effects of illegal drug use on the brain, judgment and common sense. |
