Anyone see this on todays grade 3 high school listening test (question 15)? I love it when they attempt word-for-word tanslations of Korean proverbs and then try to offer it as a potential ending to an English conversation.

At least they included the indefinite article...

I suppose it's maginally better than teaching them 'many a mickle makes a muckle'

It's rather poetic.

'Some a big can break to little of many.'

Holy shit - it turns out that 'Many a little makes a big thing' was the correct answer - at least I can't see how any of the other four idioms offered could have fit the conversation. For the most part the listening tests are fairly idiomatic and accurate, but things like this can only make you hope they get some bloody native-speaking editors for the CSAT.

I thinking about getting a job writing the new Textbook do I qualify

Minsu: I am not happy with my appearance. I want to lose my weight.

Sora: You had better lose your weight. I do believe you should eat more well being food.

Minsu: How kind you are. You are my best friend in the world.

Sora: Just remember if at first you don't succeed try, try, again.

Minsu: Yes I know. Abraham Lincoln failed many times in his life.

Sora: You're right . No pain, no gain.

Sometimes when I go out with fellow EFL teachers I play talk Korean English textbook style. After the first twenty minutes it gets really hard.

I am so glad that other people noticed this as well. I actually pointed it out to my coteacher after the exam.

My first thought was, is this an actual saying? The other four choices I have heard before (albeit without the mistakes) but this one was completely new to me.

Then it dawned on me-- they probably wrote the question without knowing the answer, and had to make something up to fit the situation.

Just as an aside, can anybody place the accent of the female voice actor? It has really been bothering me. I surmise that she is not American, since she mispronounced "Obama". At times I thought she was Canadian, other times Korean.

God, I need to get out of this country. I am really starting to overthink this.

I can't remember what her name is but I believe she's an American. She had a programme on TV for a while and has done a lot of audio recordings for various things in Korea. If you go to the DMZ centre at Paju you'll recognise her voice narrating the English videos there.
