We were initially told by our recruiter that we'd have no issues getting a job through EPIK in Busan, which is our first choice for a city to live in
Does anyone have any input, and/or has anyone heard this same thing?
Thanks!

Why don't you just get married? It only costs like a $100. You can always have a wedding later on. It's just a nice solid contract to have and I'm sure they'll have no issue housing you with that extra assurance. |

...or... you could call EPIK and ask them directly.
I'm not saying your recruiter is a liar, but here is a recent photo of him with his pants on fire. |

Now that we have turned in our applications and our waiting on an interview, he sent a chart stating that there is NO couples housing available in Busan or Daejon for Sept. 2009. Has anyone else heard of this?
The reason that my recruiter gave is that it costs more for the school to pay for couples housing in bigger cities than for 2 separate single housing apts.
Is it really MORE expensive for the school to pay for one slightly larger apt. then 2 separate apartments in Busan? It does not seem to make sense.
He also told me that he'd had several unmarried couples break up and caused him to lose money, so I'm just curious as to what is really going on with this situation. It kind of seems like he wants us to apply for single housing as a preventative measure incase that we break up, he will not lose his money. I don't know what to think!
Does anyone have any input, and/or has anyone heard this same thing?
Thanks!

we were sent a sheet which he said came from epik with housing openings for fall 2009.
It said 50 spots open for Busan, no couples housing.

If I were a school I wouldnt pay for couples housing. Even if the couple was working at two dfifferent schools in the county.
Last month a couple from England cqame here. Teh school paid 600,000 for them to get a HOUSE, not apartment. Withen 2 weeks of being here and buying a lot of furniture, 600,000 settlement + extra money on there card, they broe up.
The put it all over facebook. Now the guy brings new women home and the exgirlfriend wants to move out. School cant do much due to the fact the key money they put down on the house.
I agree couples shouldnt get couples housing unless married. |

My wife and I just got the same update. Apparently even married couples will not be provided housing in Pusan. Pusan was the only location choice on our application.
Does this really mean that if we want to teach PS in Pusan we'll have to find our own housing?
I started a thread about this here: http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=153016 |

we heard that due to the present economic state, housing in Pusan is very limited, very expensive, and very difficult to find, as of recently. This is the reason for no couples housing. It would be interesting to see if anyone can verify this. |

Did you have a second location choice ramen? Now I'm getting worried EPIK might simply discard our application if we're a couple applying for Busan only |

We put Busan and Daejon, which is married only. Daejon was our 2nd choice because of it's proximity to seoul. May put Ulsan as 3rd choice, now.
We are worried about that as well! We have "not willing to work elsewhere" on our ap. |

why don't the two of you stay in the single apartment provided, and one of you can collect the living allowance. You can get a nice big bed with 400,000 a month.
You could opt to find your own apartment as well, which I imagine is quite a hassle for a newbie but not impossible. |

My girlfriend and I are in exactly the same position, we had a rather bizarre EPIK interview last week and were told that our top 3 choices of location are not available.
Would it be feasible to share single accommodation or are the rooms unbearably small? |

Cripes... take the monthly allowance for 2 people and rent a yogwan until you find your own place. |

What EPIK is saying doesn't seem to make any sense. EPIK budgets 5 million won for keymoney and 400,000 a month for rent per teacher. I found a very large one-room very close to Haeundae beach (a popular spot) for that price just two months ago.
A couple should get double that amount (that's how it was explained to me at EPIK orientation this spring) which would be 10 million key money and 800,000 a month for rent. You can find a very nice, 2 or 3 room apartment in Busan for that price.
When I was looking, it seemed like there were more larger apartments available than one-rooms, at least in Haeundae. |
