Quote:
Over 1,500 farmers in an Indian state committed suicide after being driven to debt by crop failure, it was reported today.

The agricultural state of Chattisgarh was hit by falling water levels.

"The water level has gone down below 250 feet here. It used to be at 40 feet a few years ago," Shatrughan Sahu, a villager in one of the districts, told Down To Earth magazine

"Most of the farmers here are indebted and only God can save the ones who do not have a bore well."

Mr Sahu lives in a district that recorded 206 farmer suicides last year. Police records for the district add that many deaths occur due to debt and economic distress.

In another village nearby, Beturam Sahu, who owned two acres of land was among those who committed suicide. His crop is yet to be harvested, but his son Lakhnu left to take up a job as a manual labourer.

His family must repay a debt of 400 and the crop this year is poor.

That's a shocking statistic, no matter how you look at it.

So suicide is more an economic than a psychiatric problem.

An aspiring social science researcher ought to do a study correlating mental health with economic health.

Who said money can't buy happiness? I'm sure depressed when I'm broke.

We touched on it in college (I did major in Sociology). There is a credible link between the two.

Many people around the world drink the tainted red kool aid over financial problems.

...putting it simply.

So next time I have a suicidal patient, I should refer him not to his local psychiatric hospital, but to...Mises?

You make the call.

And of course, he did start "The Depression Thread."

Is this the reason that times of economic lows are called "depressions?"

Well, for us privileged westerners, living debt free is easy. But for some peasant farmer in India, I doubt putting away 20%/income month after month is possible.

But since I'm on my soapbox... Debt is evil. And I say that as an atheist.

This is inevitable. They've been using the underground aquifers faster than they're replenishing. Think of it as basically mining water. Once it's gone it's gone. Deeper wells and bigger pumps isn't going to help either. That will simply speed up the final crisis.

Countries overusing underground water need to rethink their farming techniques, land use and population. This will happen, either the easy way or the hard way.

America's great plains have a similar issue. The aquifier there is seriously depleted. Some scientists are advocating a return to the natural grasslands.
