I'm writing a research paper on failing/failed hagwons, and if you have experience in this area, I could use your help.
I would ask you to fill out a basic survey and answer some questions about your experiences there. In addition to helping me with my research, it may provide you with an opportunity to vent and say whatever you want.
All responses would be kept strictly anonymous.
If you can at all help, please pm me. I am developing the survey now and would get back to you in a week or so, assuming my Professor approves it.

I can respond re: why my ex-hagwon failed to keep me if you want. I think the chain is now out of business. |

The thing is teachers don't always know their hagwon is failing. The hagwon owner might just try to sell it to another owner and leave. Then the new owner has some investment money. It dwindles, and the cycle continues. A new owner wastes away their money.
By fail, do you mean where the hagwon completely shuts down and tells its teacher, "No mo money, so soweee"? |

Yu-Bum-Suk and lifeinkorea-
Yes, basically. I'm developing a survey I'd like you to answer with questions regarding the physical location of the hagwon, the student population, the hours/rate of pay, being paid on time, and when things started to go south, as it were. Like, you noticed fewer students enrolled in class, the lights went off b/c the electric bill wasn't paid, etc.
I am aware that teachers don't always know when a hagwon is failing, but they sometimes do know something is up when they go home and the landlord says "Your hagwon hasn't been paying me rent, so you're out" or when the paychecks are short, etc.
I'm developing the survey now, I hope to have it finished and approved by the end of next week. If either of you, or anyone else, would like to help me by giving your input, it would be most appreciated. I can assure complete anonymity.
I really need and hope to get as many responses as possible, so, if you're on the fence about helping me, please understand this is only for an academic research paper and in no way will any information be shared with anyone besides my supervising professor. |

I should be able to help. Like I said, I'm not exactly sure when my ex-hagwon went out of business, but I gather it was about two years after I left. Just PM me with whatever whenever. |

I recommend you provide an e-mail address to contact you by.
Most of the people who brouse the threads on Dave's ESL Cafe do not have accounts and so could not PM you. Furthermore, for those who do have accounts, one must have posted at least 25 messages before one is even allowed to PM. So even those who do have an account, it is likely that they won't be able to PM you. If you don't want to provide your personal e-mail address, I recommed creating one just for this project. Your project sounds like a big one.
Good luck! |
