I want to buy an external hard drive. it's powered by a USB port so no voltage worries, but can I change the backup software into English?
Can I just plug it in and have it work like a flash drive?

No I woulden't get a USB powered HD.. I'd get a Lacie Quadra 500GB with a eSATA II... It has an ultra high speed connection and you won't have to worry about the HD pulling too much current from the USB which sometimes happens.
