I have to mark 120 English diaries this week. It's proving to be time consuming, but all my lessons have been cancelled this week, so I don't have anything else to do.
It's proving to be interesting, so I thought I'd share a few of the entries with you. Feel free to post feedback suggstions etc
First up: The bewildering.

Surely you're not correcting each trainwrecked grammar sentence like that above?
How do you grade the students' diaries? That seems like a lot of grading to do. Do you have a rubric, or are you just looking to see who actually wrote something? |

Well, with the one above, which is taken from the better of my two 2nd grade classes I teach (god only knows what's in-store with the lower class), I just told him to keep his sentences short and simple and to make use of the full stop. I just don't have the time to give an expanded critique, not that I imagine the students would actually care even if I did.

This is a new thing they've just sprung on me. I've a light schedule, so it's not that burdensome. I'm basically just correcting verbs into the right tense etc and changing or adding personal pronouns etc that kind of thing. Some of them are actually okay, but as I said, I'm expecting the standard to drop as I progress through them. I've got my 1st grade ones still to mark which should throw up a few golden nuggets of Korean wisdom. |

It's not only the contents of these little diaries that's proving to be interesting; the diaries themselves are giving a delicious insight into the Korean psyche. For example:
An illustrated picture of some kind of terrier stood on his hind legs. One paw is balancing a steaming bowl of soup, whilst the other is resting on a large can of "John's Tomato Sauce". The text reads:
[Front cover]
Terrier Said
My favorite things ...tomato soup
"It tastes so mysterious and we can't forget the special experience. Deep & rich soup. Hot taste"
[Back cover]
I like tomato soup very much ^---^
Yesterday is gone and tomorrow is out of sight.
I just have today for the extreme taste of this last one! |

I'd give them about the same amount of attention to detail and time your students most likely afforded you in writing them...not much, no doubt.
Internet translators get 0 points.
Extremely short or incomplete entries, 1 or 2 points, depending on length.
Entries wrought with grammar, syntax and spelling errors, 2 to 3 points.
Entries with semi-intelligible sentences or considerable effort shining through, 4 points.
Nearly perfect sentences that resemble paragraph format, 5 points.
Forget about correcting them unless students specifically request it. |

I use stamps - the kids love 'em -
the students who make me laugh get extras then I read them aloud to the class
no effort or very little get a stamp that says for the parents to please talk to the kids
other stamps are good, excellent, etc.
find them in the stationery stores, worth it - really - I was here maybe 3 years before I learned about them. |

Some of my middle schoolers learned 'wankle' from a certain Englishwoman at a certain English camp. It sounded so ridiculous I thought I'd just let it fly. |

7-8 year olds doing diaries!!! Great. But, tell them to keep it very simple and do not use comp. translation. Maybe not even a dictionnary. Just use what they can use on their own as a way to reinforce the language they already know. I would expect something like: "My dog is my friend. We watch TV together." That would be better than trying to write something advanced in Korean and use a comp. traslation. |
