Coffee cup,
is it true what I've thought about you for awhile "Homer," your official stance is to oppose fellow westerners in any way you can?
In short: nope. I balance things out my man thats all and sometimes balancing requires leaning further to compensate for the extreme of the other end of the spectrum.
I do not oppose westerners here. I oppose all pervaiding blanket statements about things that people do not even try to understand. Thats all.
But forgive me if I am wrong, but it seems to me there are SOME decent and dignified foreigners in this country.
You are not wrong of course and I would never say that there are no good wae guks here. In fact I never even said that. Saying that all westerners are bad would be just as idiotic then saying all Koreans are bad. See my point?
Gwangjuboy,
I wonder whether a similar story about Koreans would offend your apologist views.
Once again G-boyits a miss my man.
You go right ahead and write a similar story about a Korean being abducted and taken to North America, forced to teach and being paid for it
I was responding to a thread my manpay attention.
Plus it was s-a-t-i-r-eas in not to be taken litteraly.
Finally G-boyonce more I strongly suggest you a) Look up the word apologist in the dictionary and b) That after you do so you read some of my posts and try and pay attention.
If you dont feel like it then no worries. Its not going to make me lose any sleep.

Excellent post Homer. As soon as I read it I knew that it was going to tick off the "hate Korea" crowd.
And it looks like it has. |

I still don't get it.
What's funny about the op?
Homer, your claims of trying to balance things out is funny.
LMG,
Thanks for the pic.
I've done her already though. |

NOt everyone is so lucky to work only 6 hours a day. Some foreign teachers work days of 8-9 hours and then have other shit to do in the meantime, be it report cards, phone teaching, etc. The occasional saturday too, to take the kids somewhere or something. |

The author of "Kimchi Farm" was a better satirist, but I'll give you brownie points for trying. |

I won't even start about University teachers here.
|
Yeah, lets compare university faculty here and in the States. In the States, in the Social Sciences, the work is non-stop and the pay relatively low. I know there is a gravy train, sometimes, for people in the sciences, but in the humanitites and social sciences, it can be hell.
First there are years of training- don't even think of getting a university positition without a Phd, or at least your candidacy in hand and a dissertation well under way. So, if you are really focussed, you can complete a Phd in three or four years- after the four or five it takes for the B.A.. Of course, if you want a job in a good university, you had better go to a good undergrad and grad school and do really, really well.
So, you get the right schools and the right committees and the right grades and the right dissertation topic, you then may get some interviews. Then you may even get a job, or else you will be hanging around your grad school for another year adjunct teaching (teaching university courses and getting paid $1500 or $2000 a course a semester, without benefits.)
The vast majority of undergrad courses taught in the U.S. right now- from community colleges to the ivy league, are taught by adjuncts and teaching assistants, thus the dearth of teaching positions. I know people who, with Phd.s in hand, went for years teaching adjunct until they gave up and retooled for a different livlihood.
But, you may get a job! In the mountains of West Virginia, or in nowhere Nevada. Then you will have to really break you back to finish the dissertation, if you haven't yet, or find a publisher for it if you have. If that is not possible, while you are learning a new job, trying to impress your colleagues, and attending innumerable faculty meetings and doing all of the other grunt work deemed beneath the dignity of the senior faculty, you had better do some research and get publications going, or you won't get good reviews. Then you won't get tenure, then you won't be rehired, and then you are on the downwards spiral that will send you looking for that alternative livlihood.
University teaching in the United States is almost like the lottery- you may get lucky and land a tenure track job at a school you like in a city you like, but the odds are increasingly long. You will spend years paying your dues by attending innumerable academic conferences, working your butt off during breaks to write publishable research, and attending to department business and taking care of graduate students. All of this for not so great money.
Okay, this is definitely coming from experience, so maybe my view is a bit jaundiced- but I believe it to be fairly accurate.
My university job here is definitely less intellectually rewarding, but it beats the jobs I had in the States in every other way. |

I dont think we get paid enough, especially since the exchange rate went to hell for most of us. most of us make around 2m in hogwans, i expect to make more than $500 a week when i go back to canada cause that's all we make here, and if we want to leave our jobs in canada we dont get harased, sued, kicked, threatened and all the other crap that goes on here. Korea is very undeveloped in this respect, i think |

I did pay attention. And satire can offend. That was my point. Do you really believe that I took that nonsense seriously. And, as you are prepared to offer me advice about how I use the word "apologist," I will return the favour. Look up the word "literally." |

Foreigner Awakes in Korea. Does not know what happened!!!
Kidnapped and flown on the other side of the world in a country of savages and forced to earn his wages. He was even forced to work and eat different foods. He was paid in foreign currency. The poor man even had to listen to another language than the pure English that is spoken in Heaven. This is the story of one man who escaped against the odds. This is the story of....Joe Self, back from a season in hell.
I caught up with Joe while he was in line collecting his welfare check and we had a chat about his horrible experience.
MG.
So, Joe, what went wrong?
JS
I don't know man. I finished my degree and thought I should look for a job you know. I was minding my own business, walking downtown. I passed in front of this building with a flag on it. It said "Korean Embassy". Next thing I know I felt a sharp blow to the head.
MG
What happened next?
JS
I woke up in this basement. I could hear dripping water in the shadows and it was cold and damp. It was also very dark. I could smell cigarette smoke. So I called out "anyone there?" All I heard was my own echo. Then suddenly a light came on and it was shone into my face. It blinded me. Then I heard voices, they were speaking in demon language, it was horrible.
MG
That sounds aweful. What was happening?
JS
Well, one man came closer, he spoke in an English that had an accent, it was scary I tell you. He said..no its too horrible I cant.
MG
Take your time Joe, its ok.
At this time I handed Joe a tissue so he could wipe his tears.
JS
Sorry, its still hard to talk about this. He said You are going to work for us in an English school. We are going to fly you over, pay you more than you are worth and house you, you got that?
I was scared, didnt know what to do you knowso I agreed. Then they put a hood on my head and I fainted.
MG
Then what?
JS
I could feel we were driving somewhere because we were in a car. Then the took the hood off and we were at this airport. Next to me there were two big guys and they took me to the counter. There was this lady there and she took my ticket and said it was time to board. The two guys left then. I was alone but what could I do, I was scared! So, I went in the plane.
MG
Its ok JS you could not know what these savages would do to you.
JS
Yeah thats right. Well anyways, we landed in this place called Korea a few hours later. After going through customs, I came out of the gate and there was this non-white person with a sign that had my name on it. In fact, it was full of these strange looking people who did not speak English, that was weird. I did not know such a place existed!
Well, the person ended up being a woman and she took me by taxi to this building. She said this is where I lived. We went up to the 4th floor and she led me into this apartment. Then she pulled out an envelope with some strange looking money in it. I looked at it was confused. Then she uttered words that still run shivers down my spine. She said See you at work tomorrow!!
Work..what did she mean? I am a westerner, why should I be expected to work here!
MG
I cannot imagine the horror of it.
JS
Well thats when it started, I mean they expected me to show up at this school and actually work. They even had the gall to pay me in foreign bills. The thing is no one spoke the language of heaven there, I was like a blessed child in pagan lands.
MG
Thats beautiful man, brings a tear to my eye.
JS
Well, anyway, it was hell, work, getting paidyou know..having to earn it. I decided enough was enough when they bought me lunch and expected me to eat this strange food.
Then and there I decided I was busting out of this concentration camp.
Lucky for me the AFKWRTWBWTBPVWA had offices there and they were running a pipeline to freedom. They got me out of there and now I am suing the country for psychological damage due to me ignoring the obvious. We think we are going to win.
MG
Did you escape right away?
JS
No, I waited one month till right after payday, you know because thats my right.
MG
Of course, youre a westerner.
JS
Yeah man. But people out there should know that this happens. This is slavery man. I felt like my brothers and sisters from Africa when the were kidnapped and sold into slavery.
Gotta fight the power man. We should bomb them. How dare they expect us to work.
MG
This ended the interview but as you can see, its a dangerous world out there for us westerners. We have to be careful not to be kidnapped and sold into slavery as teachers! |
Excellent post Homer. And as usual the whinners are out in full force, looks like they can't take a joke, or read a post properly. |
