All of my classes except one are pretty good and usually fun to teach, but I have one class that really doesn't want to be at hogwan. They don't do anything and speak to me in Korean when I speak to them. They throw paper on the floor and cheat on their daily vocab tests. They must think I hate them since I get the Korean teacher to call their parents or give them detention. I understand their young lives suck. I'm not getting anywhere with them anymore, so I need something new to revive the class with.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I might kind of revive the class. I've still got 5 weeks with these kids.

Well you are a teacher so it's inevitable someones gonna hate you and not want to be there...In fact that SHOULD be almost all students. So actually consider yourself lucky.

I always thought something was particularly odd that my kids loved me and always wanted to say hi and give me hi fives. How many of us kids actually liked to be in class and actually liked our teacher?

Don't fret about it, Just keep going with them and truck along as you've been doing (assuming you've been doing well).

Don't take a child's opinion to mean ANYTHING. because it doesn't.
If I changed my will to every whim and cry and moan and "teacher we don't like this" then I might as well buy them all baskin robbins ice cream, open up my wallet and say "Let's go to the toy store! everything''s on me! go crazy kids!" YAYYYYYY!

But to address your concern more realistically, don't do anything, in fact punish them even more for being lethargic, lazy and unenthusiastic.

See, some of my kids think that acting all slumped and sighing and acting all depressed is somehow magically going to make me say... hey guys, you're down, let's play a game. That's only reinforcing stupid, disrespectful, and obnxious behavior that they may carry onto their adult lives.

You don't want to be in school? You don't want to learn? Oh too freaking bad. So don't the other god knows billions of other kids around the world who hate shcool. Do adults like to work 9-5 jobs?

It's normal if kids don't want to be there or don't want to learn. That's completley natural. If that hate you, that's probably even more natural.

Sounds to me you are doing your job well. Keep up the good work ^^

try being a good teacher. And try making the students respect you. That's what I do.

Do something fun with them, something different, something unexpected; something that will show them your on their side, that you care.

Goku,

I think you really need to stop seeing the world through your own dark colored glasses. First off, learning is something inherent and alive in all kids. It is why humans are humans. The problem isn't that they don't want to learn - the problem is how the learning is set up. Nothing normal about the situation described - learning is the norm.

I suggest - ask the students what they want and what can be done. You don't have to do everything they want but giving them a little feeling that they have some say in their own "life", will do wonders to their motivation. Further, it brings some curiosity and tasking into the learning situation. Children learn because they want to accomplish something - it is this which drives them forward. Doesn't have to be a game but there must be "anticipation" there. If it is the same old, same old.... get the worksheets done, finish exercise "X, Y,Z" -- you will be doomed to an undermotivated class of off task students causing mayhem. Children cause trouble not because they don't want to learn but because they aren't challenged and the learning environment is improperly set up.

Get some feedback from them. As a beginning, you might even try independent learning, until they are working well. (meaning, probably some are just unchallenged, others totally baffled, the ones in the middle, distracted by the other two ends - so the whole class is in disarray).

I'd also suggest that EVERY lesson/class be about their life, their interests. This is the core of the young learner's motivation. Relate everything to them, their friends, their family, their hobbies and interests....go from there to organize curriculum.

but you are doing the right thing, asking others for some options and advice. It all begins with thinking about the root of the problem, not thinking as Goku suggests - the leaves waving at the wind.

If you have only one class that isn't 'pretty good' or 'fun to teach' you're doing much better than 90% of hagwon teachers. Get a puzzle book that will last five weeks and write it off.
