Okay, let me introduce myself, my name is Tony, and I figured I'd make my FIRST post somewhat unique.

I'm not going to ask, "Where can I get Deodorant in Seoul" or "Will Korean girls dig me because I can't score a date in America"? LOL

Just kidding.

But....I'm a big comicbook/sci-fi geek. You know, saw the movie IronMan, Hulk, and the UP and coming Wolverine Movie as well.

I also do some "table top gaming" as well such as Heroclix and the like.

That said I did a little search on Google to see if I could come up with "Comic Book Shops in Korea"

I came up with this article which was interesting

http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-68915781.html

Of course you have to purchase a subscription to pay to read the article.

Anyhow, with that said.

Any comic shops and Geeky stores in Korea? Sci-Fi conventions (please don't' tell me it's ALL 100% Anime' LOL

With that said, I'd like to thank Dave for welcoming me this to this board!

A good handful of girls at my highschool read comic books and they're as varied here as they are in North America (i.e. not just anime). The ones that I saw were in Korean but I'm sure you could find english ones just as easily - My city has at least one store that sells comics that I can think of off the top of my head, so I'm sure if you're living in Seoul it'll be even easier. Just head to shopping areas where young people congregate and you'll do alright.

So... yes.

Tabletop gaming, not sure. There must be a expat network for that in Seoul, try looking on meetup.com and facebook.

Good luck!

English Comics are only really available in giant bookstores, and even then the selection is pitiful. Korea has a singular obsession with sci-fi: Starcraft. Off-hand, I can't think of any sci-fi Korean TV, movie or literature.

There's still plenty of opportunity to get your nerd on in Korea. People here play video games professionally, the Internet is near omnipresent, I knew a guy who farmed rare items in MMORPGs and sold them for real cash for a living. This place is about as geeky as it gets.

Hm, I might have to resort to Marvel's "Digital Comics" subscription. LOL

I might miss Heroclix though. (it's a table top game involving Marvel Figs (aka - figures)

Oh, and is this "Star Craft" the FIRST game that you only need a Pentium 90 to play on??

Wow,.....technologically advanced, but going backwards in gaming. lol

If you call getting 100k per year for playing starcraft going backwards then you may need to define what going forwards means. Why do you think Starcraft II hasn't been released yet?

Substance > Flash any day. That's why next gen games piss me off with the exception of Call of Duty 4.

The idea that Korea is a very 'techie' country is all wrong.........a few koreans indulge in the latest tech offerings, a very few. 99.9% of Koreans have a cool cellphone but that's where it ends......also, the latest tech is quite expensive in Korea......

........you can still see computers running Windows 98 here.....it's going to be absolutely years before they will be prised away from XP......never mind Vista and Windows 7..............the average Korean home computer wouldn't do for a doorstop in my house........

.......Koreans shy away from the latest tech advancements until it reaches a tipping point in other parts of the world, and then everyone jumps on it.

Where do you hail from...it beats the hell out of everywhere else except maybe japan for techie stuff. This place is hella wired...

Lastly, nerds in Korea are into different things than their western counterparts....such as photography....they're big into that....less so into war gaming....they love Sci-fi and gaming...anything invovle computers is in...so is models.

So true. I've seen people with piles of expensive camera equipment taking photo after photo of their significant other standing next to things making the V.

To the OP: I don't know what Heroclix is, but there are a lot of people into board games in Korea, I'm sure you can find a substitute.

Agreed. I went computer shopping in Yongsan and asked for enthusiast level parts, such as a Nvidia GTX 280 video card, Raptor HD, etc.. They looked at me like I was from Mars. They had absolutely no clue what I was talking about and said that they never even heard of such products. Korea being the home country to Zalman, I really thought they would be into computers, but they are not. Every store I went to in Yongsan was pitching on price/value, instead of performance. Every salesperson I talked to told me to buy a cheaper computer, which was rather the opposite of an American computer salesperson.

I had exactly the same experience..........A salesman talking you out of buying the more expensive product is a strange one..........Koreans have a strong tendency to the mainstream......it seems to me that it's only really in the case of cellphones do Koreans rush out and buy the latest and best choice.

There is, literally, ONE table-top gaming store in Korea. It's in Hongdae.

Likely because they don't sell that part(being small shops)...of course they're going to try to convince you to buy something else...I've found all sorts of obscure computer supplies like the ultra quiet Scythe case fans....at the RIGHT store of course.

On the flip side, try camera shopping....With the exception of lens filters. they're not pushing cheap.
