A new principle came into our school and is trying to break up our awesome group of teachers.

We have english teachers here that are just amazing together...I mean we gel really well and we got it down to a system. When we roll together we get things done.

The new principle hates that he doesn't have control over us and is enforcing rules that weren't enforced before simply because he is wishing we trip up. I'm talking about anything from changing working hours to dress code...

Is there a dress code for us? Is it up to the school?

If it's not this now, then it'll be something lataer...
I've never seen such a fat bastard....damn, what a fat bastard

this PRINCIPAL clearly has no PRINCIPLES.

but a power thing-ie is typical among Korean ones, or so I'm told. (and perhaps not only Korean ones)

yes, I think he would have very wide latitude over the dress code, barring say a mandatory tuxedo. He can probably force suits, if she/really wants to.

Yah sorry to hear that. Principals make or break a good school. It's the same for me, my principal is not that great. Makes life for the teacher's here a living hole.
Not sure about the dress code, but my princpal demanded that I wear suit earlier in the year, I simply said no and that was that. BTW I dress in dress pants and wear a button down shirt/tie sometimes.

So good luck

OP,

Common tale of insecure Korean boss who can't do the job him/herself. Thus, it boils down to insecurity and a wish to conquer and divide the group.

If you guys are getting things done and work well together......stick to it. Don't let this asshole break up the group. In fact, it should make you guys stronger.

Dress code...fine, enforce it...I can follow it.

But if someone here's gets moved you might see on the news about some foreigners destroying a school...

I'm joking, but oh man.....

sounds like a hogwan, ergo you don't have a principal.

or principle.

what you have is a director - with no principles.

Happens in Korean companies, too....

Insecure, incapable boss who got his job because of connections, embellishment, and a bit of luck is put in charge. For fear of seeming weak due to his insecurity in innability to lead the company with any sort of vision, he generally gives the workers a lot of mindless busywork to occupy them while he embezzles funds. Often, they hire friends who are in on the scam and earn a little on the side as they grease the wheels and hide the tracks of illegal opportunism.

Happens more than we realize.

Not quite the same situation as your principal, but I'll bet the non-money half of it is true.

Dress up and tell him what he wants to hear, but try to keep your teaching style the same. Lots of outward shows of deference is key.

Are there women in the group? Holy hell that'll drive the native boss crazy. A woman in Korea who doesn't know her place relative to the alpha male.

I think your clique should unite and start doing little things that aggravate the hell out of this guy and make him lose face at teeny bit at a time. Wish I were there. I live for this kind of thing. Somebody like this would be an perfect addition to my TESOL novella, a story filled with fruitcakes and head cases.
