Getting onto the Yongsan Base

I have this test I'm taking next Tuesday at the testing center on the Yongsan Base, but no way to get on-base. I already registered for the test. I'm allowed to take the test, says the testing center, but I cannot figure out a way to get on-base.

I tried sticking signs all around Itaewon and Yongsan that advertised that anyone who can escort me on the base for about three hours gets $50. That's over $16 an hour. Not bad cash, folks.

I posted 11 signs (or gave them to people) and so far have gotten no replies.

Come on folks, $50 for meeting me at the gate and doing whatever you want for a couple of hours while I take a test. Ain't that hard!

If anyone knows a soldier who isn't filthy stinkin' rich and would actually like to make $50 easily, let me know.

I just need to get onto the base from 12:30 - 2:30 on Tuesday (4/28 ). Anyone who does this for me gets $50.

If there are no takers, can anyone tell me another way I could get onto the base? The testing center has already said they don't escort just for a test.

Do you really not see why this would look suspicious to anyone with clearance?

If you don't have any friends who can get you on the base, you're out of luck.

I do have military friends, but only one guy seems to be able to help me out, and only on one testing day. I have to take three tests.

I'm pretty desperate here, because I need to take them all by early May or I won't graduate. That's why I'm offering $50 and trying crap shoots like posting fliers.

If all else fails, I'm actually going to fly to Tokyo where I can take these tests without entering a base. It's that important.

Of course it ain't. But, while DOD regs might say something different, regs from a cousin organization I used to work for say that your escort must stay with you for the duration of your stay on base.

I'd forfeit the $50, then go to the bar. Talk to a solder, and ask to be introduced to their sergeant. Then go back to the bar and explain the situation.

There is absolutely no regulation in government, ever, at all, that can't be resolved by a "deviation." In order to deviate from SOP (Standard Operating Procedure), you must file a deviation. This is perfectly legal. This is done in advance.

I can imagine that I could be on base at the local area without an escort. I imagine I would need clearance from the base commander, special dispensation from the DOD, a nondisclosure agreement, shit...I dunno...

I would need to be printed. AGAIN.. Because even with the ONID, you can't have one blasted set of fingerprints translate everywhere. Fine. I've been printed.... 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, I think... 12.. Then for permits... 13, 14, 15, 16... .. times... since I turned 18. PITA, but whatever.

You need to be deviated.

Start talking, start networking, in a few months, you'll know someone who knows someone who can get you the proper clearance.

But man...it ain't easy.

Are you sure it's on Yongsan base itself, or is it at the place around the corner from the Yongsan War Museum, on the big N/S road leading up to Yongsan (Train) Station?

When I took an exam in "Yongsan", it was at the "Annex center", in a auto garage, actually, that they cleaned out for our test. Our names were already on a list the MP's or whatever they are double-checked along our passports and we were admitted into the 'base', but only into the testing area.

You may not someone to 'sign in' if the test administrators and the US Army have their acts together.

Unfortunately, I only have about two weeks, not several months...

So I guess what I'll do is take my Sergeant friend's advice, hit a juicy bar near a base, and make a bunch of quick friends, and then "oh, by the way, there's this test that I really need to take on-base but I don't know anyone who can help me out." Using people is wrong, but if I don't do it and get all my CLEP tests taken by May 9, I won't graduate.

Either that, or I take a flight to Japan and take them at Temple University. Personally, I don't like either option, but nothing's worse than being degree-less.

Dam, can't they grant you a pass and escort you to CLEP test? Maybe contact the base commander or other military officer? Maybe CLEP test/education base coordinator personnel can arrange for you to be allowed on base and escorted to and from the test site? Shouldn't be a problem for a veteran to CLEP test on base if going through the proper channels.

you can use CLEP this late in your academic career? i earned 21 college credits off CLEP in one day back in the service. nothing like lopping off 1.5 semesters in a day.

if things remain the same, they won't give you same day results. the CLEP folks'll have to send the results to your institute of higher learning which will then verify and issue credits. took mine at least three months from test day to inclusion into my university records/transscript.

see if the base has an ombudsman or civilian affairs liason telephone number.

if there is a will...

The testing center is not a free-for-everyone outfit. The CLEP/ACT/etc. tests they conduct are for military and military-affiliated personnel unless there is a "space available" policy in place.

If you are authorized to take a test there, then they will escort you onto the base for the test or arrange for you to have a limited access pass.

If you called up the outfit requiring the test and you told them that there's a testing center on the base for you when you're not actually authorized to use their services, then you made a big mistake. If the military member accepts cash to take you on base, he's also making a big mistake, as in violating regulations.

And, even if you get someone to escort you onto the base, if you're not actually authorized to take the test there, you're wasting your time getting onto the base for it.

I suggest you call the testing center again and sort it out.
