Yesterday my co-teach came up to me and told me that a lot of the kids were sick with "enteritis" and diarea, but she assured me that it couldn't possibly be the food.

The kids are too smart for that as they all say it definitely is the food.

So last night I got it, crap shooting out, barfing and the worst headache I can remember. It seemed to pass after about 4 hours, so I know it wasn't something else....it HAS to be the food.

I'm sure the school won't ever admit it though. I know I can just not eat the lunch, but the poor kids...... My only hope is that some of the teachers get really sick and then they might take notice. They seem to have iron stomaches though, I don't know.

Anyone else run into this?

With sanitary conditions the way they are in public schools this comes as no surprise. Little things like soap and disposable hand towels go a long way towards stopping the spread of illnesses.

Many kids and teachers got sick at my SMOE camp. Of course, the SMOE clowns said it was the students/teachers fault (because they were using dirty water bottles). Yeah right. I saw the cafeteria staff washing the dishes/pots etc on the kitchen floor.

I dread camps, as I have to eat the food. Eating Korean cafeteria food is a nightmare for me. It's just rubbish. Prisoners would riot if they dished that muck up in a NZ jail.

I suspect it was the mushrooms, but I have no way of knowing.

I'm sure the principal knows, but just wants to keep it hush hush.
Some kids went to the hospital, but they go to the hospital for hiccups here....so I don't think they will take it seriously until someone dies.

Sometimes I show up early for lunch. Often the lunch lady is taking samples of the food which are for the health inspectors. So at my school lunch is tested every day for contaminants. I doubt it is a country wide standard or anything. Maybe our lunch lady is on probation or something. Just speculation in any case.

Just call in sick. It serves their right.

I can just bring my own, it's not that big a deal for me. But I feel sorry for the students.

Just curious what was on the menu?

Was it like meat or vegtables?

We had fried rice with vegetables. I think the vegetables and maybe even the rice was leftover from the day before. The vegetables were cooked in with the rice, so I suspect the mushrooms because cooking wouldn't help much. I know a guy who almost died from bad mushrooms.


We also had some organges which were cut up in quarters. They looked and tasted fresh, but if they used a dirty knife or set them on a dirty counter...

I only go to that school every second day, so I'm not sure what they had the day before. But many of the kids were sick from the day before's food.

The principal must know because why else would the co-teacher have made a point of telling me about the sick kids and that it "couldn't possibly be the food".

I've been so dissapointed with school food that I gave up on it after sensing that one day the chicken salad sauce was slightly off.

The staff thought it was all, but it had that certain 'zing' to it.

Never again. I'd prefer to eat proper food than the cheapest and lowest quality food that schools buy.

I thought the kimchi had an odd "fishy" taste to it today, and the cafeteria lady was really pushing it, seemed to be trying to get rid of it. Now my stomach muscles are clenching painfully.

Im really sorry to hear your cafeteria's that unhygenic. Does your cafeteria have a professional nutrionist working for it?

Ours does, and she looks like she takes her job VERY seriously, our meals are amazing- very healthy and balanced, and everything is EXTREMELY sanitary. Gloves, surgical masks, hairnets, the kitchen is spotless. Even our funky smelling water is purified and safe to drink.
Heck, I once had cold Corean omelettes and I didn't get the queasies!

Shame/Competition always works- show some pics of another school's spotless cafeteria to your coworkers and then watch the standards improve. No one likes to look bad.
