i have a few questions about finishing your contract at a pub school....
1) when did you purchase your ticket home? did they reimburse you right away or not until just before you left?
2) did you get the severance and housing deposit and last pay on your last day of work?
i finish on the 17th (not til sept but im eager!)......and i wanted to get on a plane that night, but in the case that not all owed money to me is paid promptly this could be a mistake....so just wondering if i should stick around another day...and what other people's experiences were..... |

Good questions. I'm afraid I can't provide answers but I'd like to add to them.
How was the Pension refund handled? Did you have to take initiative to get this done, or is it part of the exit process? Did you need some document from your home bank to do it? |

1) Depends on your school board. Sometimes you buy the ticket and hopefully it's reimbursed before you go or at the very least on you last pay cheque. Make sure.
OR you could order your ticket by phone to KAL or Asiana, tell them the school board is paying for it, they will give you a reservation number and you send that to your head office. That's what I do.
2) A couple weeks or so before you leave, find the district pension office, go there with your ARC, contract, your home country's bank name, address, phone number, bank number, acct. number. (I'm pretty sure that is about it) Oh yeah, and your e-ticket home. They will get all the info and in about 30 days or so, you will get a nice surprise in your acct. back home. I always liked that. |

I've been told by PS teachers here for a much longer than me that you have to wait until the next payday for your final pay, severance, and air ticket reimbursement instead of making payment on your last day. For example, if you are finished on August 31st, you have to wait until September 25th and they can't pay into your home account like pension does. This means you get a visa extension or to another country and then return to Korea as a tourist to withdraw your money since our ATM cards don't work outside of Korea. |

Nonsense! I have always received my final pay when it is due... and I've received severance either: with my final pay, or on the last day of the contract. Also, I have received my pension refund (from the Masan office) on the final day of my contract. |

you can get International ATM cards that will actually 'work' abroad.....(check out the thread in the General Discussion forum). SC (at least Itaewon branch) and KEB seem the only 2 that have a decent reputation for issuing cards that work abroad especially after the new-ish laws introduced. The others banks I'd probably avoid. |

Huh? I've never heard of such a thing.
Anyways in my case, I got all the money - last month, severance, air ticket - on my last day of work.
To Mochi, yes you do need to initiate the pension process. Just follow JJJ's advice. |

^^Actually, it's possible to arrange for the bank to automatically deposit it into your foreign account... I mean, the account you have in your home country. Well, this is possible at my bank, anyway.
When you get your last paycheck depends on a lot of things... including when everyone gets paid (they tend to pay everyone who works for the school board on the same day), when your first day of work was, and I suppose whether or not there's some sort of dodgy stuff going on with your workplace.
Usually, it's set up like this:
Let's say your payday is the 15th and you started on the 1st. That means you'll get from the 1st to the 15th on your first payday, and then from the 15th to the 15th for every month after that. Your final paycheck will be from the 15th to the end of the last month (your finish date), and you'll receive that pay on the 15th of the following month, as this is everyone's payday, including yours.
They do it this way so they can keep track of things easier, I think... |

You will be out of your apartment the day your contract is up, so don't think you're going to be waiting there to get all the money due you. |

They'll expect you to be out of the country the same day your contract ends unless you get an extension from immigration. As far as I'm aware, your apartment will be treated like your salary - once you no longer work for the school you no longer get either. If they are no longer paying you, they are no longer going to provide you with a roof over your head.
However, I am sure there are exceptions to the rule, and the only people who can give you a definitive answer are your coworkers. |
