I was told that I basically have to attend and that it involves learning about King Sejong and how to make ceramics.
Does anyone have more information about it (my regular Korean teacher liason with all things GEPIC is on maternity leave, and I was just given the name of some elementary school that I need to get to by taxi from the bus terminal ...) |

I've heard GEPIK thinks foreign teachers need to learn about culture. |

Haven't heard about this yet. I'll probably be informed on the 26th.
Why not enjoy the day off? A Monday could be worse. |

Well, I've been in Korea for over seven years, and I think I've forgotten more than I've learned about Korean culture (I think I knew some stuff about it my last life...)
It's kind of a hassle because I have an afterschool class for adults that I couldn't reschedule, and I can't afford to push that back a week because I just booked a flight, so I'll have to leave the cultural event early and maybe pay for a long taxi ride to make it back in time for the 7pm class. |

Do you need to take a culture course. If you can answer yes 4 or more of these you don't
(a) Can you use chop sticks?
(b) Can you eat food that is about as spicy as an Indian curry in your hometown?
(c) Do you know how to bow?
(d) Can you at least show some level of respect for older people?
(e) Can you sit on the floor for more than one hour? |

| I also have afternoon school stuff, and I already had to make up the last two classes with 8:20-8:50 sessions... If anything, I would either claim to be sick, or appeal to my fellow teachers and see if they feel sympathetic. |

| This is a pretty famous ceramics center in Korea, but it's a bit off the beaten path. I have not been there but if it has a large exhibit of Korean celadon ceramics, it could be a very interesting place to go. |

Well, I've found out more information about it.
Apparently only 55 foreign English teachers (under GEPIC contracts) have been invited/ordered to attend.
The event is at Shindoon Elementary school, about 6.5 km from the Icheon bus terminal, so I think the taxi fare will be around 7 or 8 thousand won each way and take at least 20 minutes.
It starts at 2pm and goes on till 6:30, with the last part dealing with making ceramics.
Since I'm 40 minutes away from Icheon bus terminal, I'll need to leave by 5:30 to get back for my adult class at 7 pm. |
