I would head to Sogang if it werent for that 45 minute subway ride from the east side of Seoul everyday...

I think I may end up at Konkuk U. because its right next door, and because I can tolerate many different teaching styles I feel like Ill get something out of the course...Ill give a review in March.

Mirabilis,

any word on Konkuk U? I am in your situation. I will be in east seoul and im leaning towards sogang because of the rep. I looked into konkuk but was unsure. any word? I'm not looking forward to the 45 min commute to seogang.

i have a few friends who've studied there. their grasps of korean are certainly equal to what i attained at sungkyunkwan univ., and i hear it's cheaper at konkuk too. judging from their willingness to continue studying there (one through level 2, two through level 4, one completed the program), i'd say konkuk is hardly a bad choice.

Thanks for the reply!

Is it possible to contact any of these individuals? If Konkuk is an OK program it will make my life certainly a lot easier. I want to go to Sogang but it is just so far away. If I can study at Konkuk and supplement witht he sogang textbooks that would be great.

What would you say your friend's (the one who completed all 6 levels) level of korean is? HIgh intermediate? Is the program super intensive like Sogang? I won't be working so that is what I am looking for.

Thanks!

i'm not sure any of the guys would be comfortable with me lining up correspondence through dave's, but i'd be happy to relay any questions you have to them.

programs vary depending on your schedule. the 200 hour, 10 week intensive is, as it suggests, intensive. having been here for awhile, i know people who've studied at a number of places, including sogang. beyond the reputation of the sogang program and what some students like to say, i can 't imagine the differences would be so vast that any other program sucks in comparison.

i can't imagine the level 1 or 2 texts from sogang, konkuk, or sungkyunkwan, just to name the few i'm more familiar with, to be that different. they certainly weren't three or four years ago. i don't think you'll need to worry about supplementing off the bat either, because the coursework is demanding when you're in class 4 hours a day, 5 days a week.

my friend who finished the intensive program at konkuk speaks exceptional korean. that's according to koreans, not just his foreign friends. obviously not flawless, but well beyond intermediate. i honestly think you can't go wrong starting of at konkuk. if you feel it isn't right, there's plenty of time to switch to sogang for the next level, etc.
